Crackerman...

This 12mm olympus? http://shop.olympus.co.uk/e_commerce/m-zuiko-premium/olympus/m-zuiko-digital-ed-12mm-1-2-0-p-945.htm

I wouldn't know which to choose, either the 17mm olympus or that 12mm... surely the only main differences being the extra wide angle, probably has better quality optics too?

It is that one, but I bought it off e-bay for around 400. It is a really nice lens but it all depends on what type of photography you are into. It suits me perfect for a landscape lens but I wouldn't use it as a walkabout lens for general shooting. Something like the Panasonic 20mm or the 17mm olympus that you're thinking about would be better for that.

Out of interest and excuse my naivety, but why wouldn't it make a good walk around lens, for street photography or just general shooting?

Could it be because its such a wide angle, that it can really 'focus' for want of a better word on the subject (as there'll be so much going on around due to the extra wide angle) so it would get a bit lost?

It's different styles for different people.

I'd use a 12mm walkabout, but then I use my 35L currently and thats hardly much wider.

Well walkaround prime lenses are generally considered to be wide aperture with a nice balance between a wide angle and a short telephoto, this allows subject separation and you don't have to be in people's faces with the camera but still allows

Personally however I've never got 'street' photography, when done well its great but mostly its just people taking photo's other people going to greggs or looking at their phone and converting them to B&W for some strange reason. Use that 12mm as you want, it'll be fine for a walkaround and you'll be able to get some nice architecture shots with it which are 100% more interesting than B&W of someone stuffing their face with a cooplands pasty. :D

I use my 35L as a walkabout at weddings (so the equivalent would be a 16mm for m43) and it does involve getting in peoples faces but the pictures are worth it. Self confidence is a big thing with it.

Yeah its all about personal preference. I bought the olympus 45mm lens as everyone raves about it, and in truth it does take lovely pictures. But since buying it I have hardly used it as I don't really like the focal length. Maybe in time I will. It may be an idea if you have already been using a zoom to see what focal length most of your photos are taken at and go from there.

Its a very specialised lens designed for portraits, if you arent shooting people its really not for you.

So new lens arrive on a bank holiday monday of all days!

Will be using this for general photograph I think, and it's on the cheaper end of prime lenses, so a good learning point with the fast aperture available (bokeh..Yo!)

Time to sell the kit 14-42 lens that came with the camera!

So I'll just be left with the 40-150mm zoom lens, which is a good all round performer apparently only up to 100mm.. after which it looses abit of quality so they say.

I love my 45mm, but yeah it's very specific in its usage. Probably going to pick up that 12mm very soon.

I've been looking at getting a new M43 body, I grabbed the E-PL5 which is great, but cant help but feel if I'm getting into it more, I should sink some more cash into a better body? Or is the E-PL5 sufficient? Are there any body recommendations? Say probably £600-ish for a body, Oly or Panny (Assuming that my other M43 lenses which are all Olympus will work fine on a Panny body).

Depends what do you think your missing with your current body? Viewfinder? Controls? Ergonomics?
I would always buy lenses first then think about a new body.

Aye, the grip on the camera isn't amazing, and I do kinda miss a view finder, I thought I wouldn't, but I do quite a bit.

I've got the bog standard zoom lens, 45mm prime and the 60mm macro, I'm interested in the 12mm Oly lens next, but after that I think I'm sorted for a while on the lens front. Not sure how much benefit a new body will give, obviously not as much as a lens would.

So as per my previous post I'm looking at getting a wider angle lens, not sure which to get, the 12mm prime looks great, but I'm not sure whether to spend a little more and take a punt with the 12-40mm to give me a range of focal lengths to play with. Was also looking at the 9-14mm but I'm thinking the 12-40mm will be the better choice overall for a kind of one fits all lens.

Will the sharpness of the 12mm prime be leaps and bounds over the zoom lens? Or will it be negligible unless it was print work?
