The (un)Official VMWare ESXi thread.

Hmmm nothing is showing in Plug-in Manager, just has Installed Plug-ins and Available Plug-ins one in bold under another with nothing else and it is throwing up an error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".

Anyone any ideas?

Are you running virtual center?
Update manager is a component of that so if not you'll just have to do your updates\install via CLI.
If you're using the Linux vCenter appliance, then you need a windows server to install update manager on.

Ah right, to the best of my knowledge no we aren't. We just have ESX-i on a server and I access it via vSphere client from my machine.

Poop, gonna have to do it at the box then :(

Installing vib's via command line is really not hard, just a bit daunting the first time you do it.

> Copy vib to a location on the server.
> Put host into Maintenance mode
> Enable SSH
> puTTY onto the server
> Run esxcli command and probably reboot server.
> Done.

There is an article on the Dell webpage for ESXi 5.0 but will in all probability work on any other version too.

Yeh I've never really dabbled with ESXi and the CLI to be honest so its a whole new territory for me haha!

We're running ESX 5.0.0 so i'll check the Dell site out for more info.

Anyone know if it's possible to connect the ESXi host with wireless? I have an old(ish) laptop with a dodgy keyboard and trackpad, and a broken ethernet port, so could be re-tasked as a "dirty" ESXi host (for practice/learning/trialing things).

I tried booting ESXI 5.1 from a USB key, boots fine, but doesn't seem to recognise the wireless adapter...

Is it a case of it just not supporting wireless, or can it be done with a spot of driver hackery and that?

Cool, cheers. So depending on what wireless card(s) I have on offer, I should be able to find and use a driver for it?

I've no idea where to start looking though...

Even if there is a driver though, does ESXi have stuff built in to handle connecting to a wirless network? To clarify I'm not passing this card through to a VM, I want the host to use it to connect to the network.

You'll have to check the vmware hardware compatibility list for your wireless card, but I think you're out of luck. I'd be very surprised if any Wireless cards were supported at all, to be honest.

I can't find mention of any wireless adapters at all in the hardware list. :(

I would be interested in this as I have a spare wireless adaptor that I could use to manage the host but passing through a proper Ethernet to the main VM would solve a number of my issues!

There are no wifi configuration options in the vSphere clients or on the console that I've ever seen. Whether that's because I've never tried to use a wifi adapter or because the options simply do not exist I can't say. I suspect the latter though. You would never need to use wifi in the enterprise on an ESXi host.

You might have more luck with Windows Server 2012 and Hyper-V.

For me, it is more about reducing the need for more Ethernet cables than I care to provide; Guess I'll just have to lay more cable under the house

Maybe in time though, there will be an option for Wifi. But personally, I don't think that this will be that stable though. Since it's wireless if ever this will happen.
