The Unofficial Fallout 3 Thread

re: scavengers

yeah but they can usually only repair up to a certain percentage. Like 56% or something. Havent found one which repairs up to 100% Gets quite expensive too which is why i thought i would just repair myself...problem with with that is that my repair is 64 (with the 101 utility suit) and yet the option to repair all my gear is greyed out. usually that means ive repaired them as much as i can already (e.g. up to 50% ish) but some of my gear is at around 40% effectiveness. No idea why it wont let me repair!

So yeah its bugging me!

You need the same (or similar) weapon/equipment to do the repairs, as it cannibalise the parts from the other. Took me 2 hours into the game before realising that it was doing...

ahh you're right - i was so excited about this game i didnt read all the manual (p29) - its in there clear as day makes collecting extra stuff more worthwhile i guess :)

Disaster! The OH was out shopping and I asked her to swing by the games section and check how much Fallout 3 was (it's still £29.99) as I plan on picking it up for next weekend. Thoughtfully she bought it, but apparently I'm not allowed to play it until my birthday in December :(

Anyone played this on PC and console?

I just don't know which to get it for. I can happily live without mods if the game is solid and well made, as by the time major mods are done I might be bored with it.

How long is the game? Both main campaign and if you go exploring. I did a fair bit of exploring in Oblivion, and finished the main quest after about 100 hours play.

If its any help, I was going to get the PC version (mainly for mods) but then I thought, the big decent mods for the PC version won't be out for a long while, so I thought I'll get the console one first. I can sit and chill and play it in comfort, then when the PC mod scene for it gets going, i'll sell it for console and put it toward the PC version

Am i missing something, but i am doing the main quest and i seem to spend an eternity going into one subway to come out at another, to go into another to rinse and repeate and it is starting to get to me.

I went overground for some of that, instead of following the arrow I just headed for the final destination. Can get a bit stuck in places though

yep you can run into more enemies as well. i stumbled into a group of raiders at the entrance to friendship station little to no ammo and one of them firing missiles at me.

It was then i remembered i had a ripper :D

dont think so?? Would be nice if there was a drug you took which made you run faster though.

Loving this game though GOTY so far for me (fighting off fierce competition from FIFA and Deadspace)

Got the Fatman - a tiny bit underwhelmed as i was hoping that the shockwave would blow me off my feet :D

I just can't for the life of me pick locks - How on earth do you do it??!! I always just try and force the lock as I always break the bobby pins :/

you have to lightly tap the left stick when you attempt to turn the lock.

If you use too much force the pin will break quickly. I just tap really lightly until i find the position which seems to move the lock the most.
Then once you do find that position - hold down left stick to turn the lock to horizontal position - and voila its open.

i would rarely break 1 pin but no more than that.

But i prefer this method than Oblivion's lockpicking method definitely.

Early on in the main quest came up against Average locks which coz i didnt have lockpick at 50 i couldnt even attempt! Is it possible to force these either? Had to leave em behind!

I have a high lockpick skill, but I found it dead easy to pick locks to be honest. However, I have only ever hacked one PC.....and my hacking/science skills are really low.

I am not quite sure how the hacking works? or is it because I just have a low science skill? Isn't it to do with letters in the word? then find one with all the correct letters? (I don't have the manual, I get promo copies of the games:))

You need science skills to hack PCs. I think the PCs come in at easy, average and hard, so 25, 50, 75.

Look out for lines with brackets facing the same way, so for example:
{>>?} This would remove one dud option or renew how many tries you have left when selected.

Questing, and selling expensive items provide good money.

You don't have to sleep. Sleeping recovers your health and limbs fully however.

It's hard to find purified water out in the wasteland. Depending on how you play your cards in megaton you can get someone that will give it to you.
