**The Wait is Over- FIRST WAVE of Gigabyte Pascal Laptops Arrived**

Atom have Gigabyte got any plans for a thin lightweight model with a 1060 around the 2kg mark?

Hi terley

Our P35 model, comes in at 2.3Kg and will be available with a GTX1060 GPU.

We don't have an ETA at the moment, but its the same chassis as the P35X model that's set up with OCUK:

Once we have delivery schedule we will post and set up with OCUK.

If you are looking for smaller for a smaller form factor, then AERO 14 is worth considering and weighs just 1.9Kg

Hope that helps,

Can I just ask about pricing?
1060 Model (P55W v6-CF1) £1,450, 1070 Model (P35X v6-CF2) £2000
Difference in stated specs is purely the GPU
Difference between desktop cost of those GPUs is what, £150? So what justifies the £550 price difference for the laptops?

Not picking on Gigabyte here - their pricing is no different to anyone else, just didn't understand and thought I might get an explanation (given the rep seemed to be here)?

Hi irh1,

The component cost of the GPU will be a big factor of course, but with the 2 models you mention there is also the chassis. The P35 is slimmer profile and aluminium materials and therefore sits at a more premium price point.

The P55 chassis comes in at 26.8~34 mm in height.

We launched the P55 and P57 chassis to enable us to achieve a more aggressive price within the overall market - this chassis is a deeper and has less costs associated with the chassis materials. Also less R&D costs associated with a bigger chassis as less difficult to engineer all the parts into the larger space - hence why most manufacturers stick with bulkier chassis for performance machines.

Hope that helps,

Atom80: Thanks for all the info. Previous versions of the P35X were compatible with Linux. I understand if you cannot officially guarantee Linux-support, but I'd still like to know whether there is anything about the new model that categorically prohibits a Linux installation/dualboot? (specific hardware with no existing Linux drivers etc.)

Hi user,

We aren't aware of anything prohibitive, but we will check with R&D to confirm this for you.

Hi user,

Reply we have received regarding your enquiry is as follows:

"R&D have tested Linux Ubuntu on our machine and they didn’t encounter any issue when Installing Linux or trying to use Dual boot function.
However, Nvidia’s Optimus architecture doesn’t work well on Ubuntu. ( It was originally designed for Microsoft Windows)
That means when running graphic related software on Ubuntu, there’s only IGPU working instead of Nvidia’s GPU."

Hope that helps,

Thanks a lot for your effort and the replies, that gave me the info I needed.

Based on previous experience with Optimus on Linux it is possible to use either the integrated or the dedicated GPU (no switching) when using the official drivers; nonetheless I'll tread carefully, NVIDIA's Linux-support may be lagging behind their release schedule. I'll edit this post once I get hands-on experience.

Thanks again!
