I know it isnt much help, but I've got the 8800GTX too, I'm using 177.89 drivers, probably the same drivers as yours I expect.
Yes that's the ones mate. Are you playing the game ok with those drivers?

The difference between 1024 x 768 and 1680 x 1080 is like on average 7 FPS. The minimum when it starts hitching remains the same.what effect does lowering your resolution have? If the problem persists after lowering the res its less likely to be a gcard issue. Try defragging your hard drive and possible running it on a separate drive as it sounds like (as you said) a texture loading problem.
So is it just people on Win XP 32bit thats having the problem?
I'm getting some random crashes at the moment, don't suppose anyone else is?
Basically just black screens every now and then, relatively common in scenarios, but I've just had it happen in normal play as well.
I've checked temps on restart and they are fine, I've updated most of my drivers. I've turned down a lot of the graphical effects (though I've got an 8800gt), and I'm just about to try running it in a window. I've read a few reports of this and wondered if anyone else had had it?
try running in fullscreen mode with the res set to the same as your desktop is.Try running in windowed mode, with the res set the same as your desktop.
Have you tried the latest 177.92 beta drivers?I'm using XP a 9600Gt, 2Gb RAM and a dual core Opteron.
My frame rates are fine with everything maxxed out, HD is defragged and seperate from my OS.
The game runs pretty much the same on min or max detail it also runs similarly well at 1280 x 1024 and 1920 x 1080 on my LCD with or without AA and AF there are some performance differences using the different setting but the main problem remains under all conditions, the glitching and pauses.
It's ruining a good game for me although I do think the problem is at Mystics end, anyone got any further suggestions? The visuals are hardly groundbreaking after all.
That is the only thing I have changed and it has completely transformed the performance. Do not ask me why or how but it has. Previously I was using the latest official drivers. I would suggest trying every solution provided on this thread as some of them do appear to work.Nope but I really don't see them making a huge difference tbh.

works for me 7/10 times.
its like the game is in software mode and i get 10-15fps gpu temps suggests its idle.
the times it works is 40-70fps and the gpu temp rises like it should.
obviously something is wrong with the games engine and something causes it to not use the gpu
