Hey guys,

Today I noticed my GTS was running a tad hotter than usual, and having resisted the enthusiast in me for so long I decided it was time to actually take off the stock cooler to give it a good clean.

Much to my disappointment, it seems that Nvidia still have not learned how to apply thermal paste or thermal pads in a decent fashion as the gunk they used was all over the place and full of gaps, and the padding they use to contact the memory chips and voltage components was literally falling apart (and into the heatsink and fan!)

Naturally I gave everything a good clean and applied some Arctic Silver 5 like a good little geek.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can buy some padding like the sort Nvidia used on the chips though? Preferably some that won't fall to bits and clog up my cooler?

Sincerely yours,
Ulfhedjinn.

P.S. No pics I'm afraid, in my disappointed state I was too busy focusing on cleaning up Nvidia's mess.

Thats the thing I noticed when I took off my stock cooler to replace it with an HR-03 Plus! THe mem pads suck and that fact is though they do fall off, i have at lease 3-4 to replace and obviously will need to in rma issues etc. Anyone know where these can be found also?

Do you think it would be worth getting that cooler to replace my stock cooler?

I do plan to overclock as much as possible sooner or later, and while the stock cooler is awesome, I've pretty much had it with this padding and stuff falling to bits in there and making a mess. :(

check my review mate ;) it cools awesomely but.....pci slots if used before become unusable! 43degrees idle, 52 load :) 46idle after 8 hours
Thanks for the review, shocked I didn't see it before. :( Pretty annoyed about the PCI slots though as I have an X-Fi sitting in my bottom PCI slot. I wonder if there'd just be enough room on the P5B Deluxe.

nvidia dont put any thermal paste or pads on the card, that is down to the manufacturer
Fair comment but I don't think I've had a graphics card since the late '90s where the factory cooling stuff wasn't utter crap, Nvidia or ATI, and this 8800GTS has been by far the worst for it up to now.

Good stuff, pity you didn't produce a before and after shot, we geeks go for that kinda stuff! :)
I edited my post because on second looks it's more than a couple of degrees it's more like 10ºC off idle temps.

I really should've done before and after now you mention it but it'll be more down to the cleaning than AS5. :(

the AS5s strength is with load temps, it can dissipate heat better than standard paste.
it also needs some time to kind of 'burn in', seems to work better after a few hours of the card being on. its the same when using it on CPUs too

Anyone know if this invalidates the warranty?
