The Way It's Meant To Be Cooled

i would imagine that pads etc are put on either by a machine or a person who hasn't got a clue how to turn a pc on let alone how thermal paste works and what it does.

I'm in the middle of lapping my CPU, so while I've got the case open I might do this aswell.

Do I need thermal pads for the memory, or will AS5 be OK? I ask because the pads are quite a bit thicker than paste. Does everything still make contact OK without them?

There's quite a gap, no way you'd make contact without pads IMO.

The pads also cover what looks like four or five sets of voltage regulators.

Ah, so did you just reuse the stock pads, or are you waiting to put it back together until you can find some fresh ones?
Actually I took them off and threw them away as they were falling apart and utterly useless anyway.

This memory doesn't run hot, I used to run my X1900 with naked memory just fine, and I plan to have some new pads by next week anyway if I can find somewhere that sells them.

Nvidia's mess?
Don't subcompany's like bfg/asus/xfx/etc... care for the cooling?
Already been covered further up the thread.

The fact remains that I've not had one graphics card since the late '90s that hasn't made me take it apart, clean and re-seat it so maybe Nvidia and ATI should be encouraging their OEMs not to be so half arsed about it. ;)

So yes, I am still going to be blaming Nvidia for this one. BFG too.

Is there another awesome GPU cooler that isnt quite as... ostentatious as the ThermalRight HR-03 PLUS?

Stock cooler on the Gainward 7900GS isnt so great :P

The 2900 funnily enough has really well applied thermal material on the core, was a perfect covering. Funny thing was the actual core has absoloutely no text on it at all, no r600 or code numbers, whole cores just a black diamond and nothing more.

Just as i thought, I had a feeling the paste was well applied to these, but WTF @ blank core

I found it pretty odd myself, ive never seen a core before with no text on it, just looked like a little black mirror.

Wonder if Jokesters was the same?, what have you used to replace the Stock cooling..

Just reseated the original cooler after redoing the compound. Wanted to see if it was making proper contact with the core.

Zalman VF-900-CU works brilliant on a 7900GS. Temps never reached above 45C even with volt-modding and big overclocks.

Also 6 children are born every second :)
