The whats wrong with my new HD7870 thread :(

Ok , so long story kinda short,

I have a week old MSI HD7870 which i think may have a fault.

I have it plugged into an MSI P67A GD53, Intel 2500k (@stock), 8gb DDR 3, Crucial M4 128gb, Corsair HX620 PSU in a Corsair 600t which has an ambient temp between mid to high 20's

Here's my problem

Whilst on the desktop the GPU is silent and averages temps of 23-27c

but

As soon as i try to play a game, within two minutes the fans jump from almost silent (1600rpm) to full speed (over 4000rpm then settle at 3500rpm which is unbelievably loud).

from looking at the temps and graph's in Afterburner, it seems that as soon as the GPU temp reaches 58-59c the fan will go directly to 100% and pretty much stay there until I exit the game.

I tried to set up a new fan profile in Afterburner (as i thought that may have been the issue), however regardless of how i set up the profile, as soon as the GPU hits the high 50's it will override the profile and ramp the fan to 100% (a note at this point is that even though the fans are running at 4000rpm the GPU says that the fans are running at 37%).

So what does everyone think? anything i could try?

(below is an image of Afterburner running Kombustor to show how the fan ramps up to over 4000 rpm while the sensor indicates that it is running at 37%)

Fan speed 39% unless I have missed something, are you sure it is going to 100%?

Generally a manual fan curve will allow you to set the fan at what temps you like but if this isn't working, maybe try reinstalling AB and see if that helps (make sure you have the tick boxes ticked).

yeah, the fan speed percentage states its at 37% regardless of what speed the fans are running at.

I tried a re-install of the OS and also popped the GFX card into my old PC to see if that would help, but was just the same
 
Sorry to bump an old thread but did you ever manage to solve this problem? I've got an MSI HD7870 and mine does exactly the same as yours. I can set the fan speed manually in Afterburner or CCC and that'll work perfectly fine until I start playing a game at which point the fans ramp up to 100%.

I've looked everywhere and can't find a solution to this, I can't wear headphones at the moment so this is even more annoying for me as the volume of the fans drowns out all the audio.
 
If either of you will upload your 7870 bios to sendspace and give me the download link i will have a look at it and edit the bios for you and try to fix the fan problem. If you want anything else changing while im there, like clock speed, voltage etc, let me know.

No, unfortunately not, In the end I had to send the card back and replace it with a different make/model.

If it’s any help, at the time there were numerous threads on MSI’s boards with people having the same issue, the only fix that worked was to remove a certain diode from the PCB on the card, and it apparently worked normally after that (sorry I don’t have a link), it did seem a pretty straight forward job, but as my card was only a couple of weeks old it was easier for me to just have it replaced.

Thanks a lot, I'll have a look into uploading the bios later, I have no idea how to do it so bare with me. :D
 
Use gpu-z to save the bios to the desktop then just upload it.

From reading that thread it sounds like the PCB was manufactured incorrectly then? I'm not going to start messing with the diodes myself because it's less than a year old and I'll probably break it! :D

I'll upload the bios first and if it can't be fixed then I guess I'll have to send it back to MSI for them to sort it out. I can't believe that they would let so many of their products leave the factory in this state!

yeah, thought the same, although it did seem a relatively easy fix, i didn't want to risk it and just got rid

According to MSI's website you can't send components directly to MSI, you have to send them back to the reseller (OcUK) who will request an RMA from MSI. Does that sound right to you? :)

Not sure what to do now. According to that thread it does seem really simple to literally push the diode off the board with a small knife...

I returned mine within the first couple of weeks for a refund, so it wasn't an RMA (not sure on MSI's return policy)

I was very, very tempted to pop off the diode, but chances are i'd have messed it up ;)

Ah right, bought mine in May last year from OcUK. Think I'll upload the bios to see if Matt can help, and while I'm waiting I'll see if I can find the diode. Not sure if I'm brave enough to cut it off myself, though if I break it there's an excuse to buy a new card... :p

Thanks for the help guys, I'll edit my post later once I've uploaded my GPU bios. :)

EDIT: Just thought I'd let you all know that I found the diode (D201) and just removed it. CCC is allowing me manual control of the fans and BF4 maxed at 1920x1080 is giving me temps of around 50 degrees at the moment on 50% fan speed which I'm pleased with. Will probably ramp the percentage up if it gets any higher temperature wise but anything is better than the constant 100% whirring that I had before. :)
