I am sat at home having a nip of Jamesons 12 year old and quite enjoying it. It's not as smooth as most Scottish whisky that I have, but thats what I like about it. Irish whiskey is very underrated and in fact Jameson's gold is one of my favourite Whiskey/Whiskey full stop. I'm not sure why the Scottish stuff involves so much snobbery. Yes it's good, (Oban being my favorite ath the minute) but so is Hennessey XO, in a different way. It's not better, not worse, just different.

So does anyone have an opinion on this, just to save me from rambling to myself :p

Do you know what, I don't think I've ever had an Irish whisky. At least I don't remember it.

Or is it whiskey that's Irish, I always forget.

It's all down to personal preference. I prefer Irish blends for everyday drinking, my favourite being Powers Gold Label with Bushmills coming in a close second. If neither are available I do still enjoy a Jamesons. As far as malts go my overall favourites are the Bushmills variety. I'm also a big fan of Islay malts but they're a completely different flavour for different occasions.

You'll get whiskey/whisky snobs who are of the opinion that if it isn't the oldest, most expensive and most obscure Scottish malt then it's not worth drinking. They're the sort that drink malts so they can tell their mates about it, they're not proper whiskey/whisky drinkers.

Like I said, it's all down to personal taste but I find a nice Irish blend to be perfect for relaxing with.

I must admit, i love powers as a chill out drink too, but I sometimes mix it, ohhh the shame!!!

Powers is a great all round whiskey. It's my favourite for making Irish coffee and hot whiskeys. It's especially nice at this time of year as the spiced flavour and aroma go well with the season. There's nothing better than curling up on the couch at Christmas time with a hot Powers to sup on.

I much prefer Irish whiskey to Scotch. I believe Irish is triple distilled whereas scotch only twice, making Irish more smooth on the pallate.

Bushmills is my favourite, I also enjoy Black Bush & Jamesons is also entirely quaffable.

If I have a bottle of Irish, it lasts a week at most. I got a bottle of Glenfiddich for my birthday in July & still have 3/4 of the bottle left, that's the difference to me. It's not that I don't like the Glenfiddich, it's just not as easy to drink.

Why does everyone ramble when they drink whisky?
What are you trying to say? I'm drinking Bud tonight, out of whisky :D

*Actually while I think of it I'm out of Bud now too, bah

Not all Irish whiskey is triple distilled, and some scottish are. As far as I know anyhow.

Shows what I know, see I'm not a whiskey snob really, I think my dad told me that anyway ;) I just drink what I like.

EDIT: Actually, doesn't the Irish have no peat used in the malting process or something, making it smoother? My drunken talks about whiskey are coming back!

But good old Jamesons is triple distilled, unlike Scotch which is only double.

:D

I amaze me, I went on the Jameson tour (when they filled my head with this propeganda years ago, and I still remember it!)

I love this thread. It prompted me to make myself a hot Powers. I'm on my 4th one now. Damn you forums, I love you really :D

Please.. do tell how to make it?.. I have a bottle of powers in the cupboard :)

You will need:

Cup
Bottle of Powers
Slice of lemon or lime
5 or 6 cloves
Hot water
Generous teaspoon of white sugar.

Put your desired amount of powers into the cup. Take your slice of lemon or lime and push the cloves into it. Place this into the cup of whiskey and let it sit whilst the kettle boils. Knock the kettle off just before it boils and pour the water over the lemon/lime and into the cup. Put a teaspoon of sugar in and give it a good stir.

Let it sit for a minute and then enjoy. Sheer bliss

Black Bush was the first Irish whiskey I ever tried - I didn't know much about any whiskey/whisky at the time but I was well impressed.

It was poured down my throat by a kind Irishman at Murrayfield many moons ago (before they got rid of the terracing) on a very cold and wet day :)
