As we know, the new 64bit version of Windows has now gone RTM, so I think its best that we have a central point of reference for this new platform.

Keep all general queries and drivers requests in here, i'm also on the look out for some decent links so if anybody can suggest some, please do.

No such thing. Remember MS says they won't ever release this OS in a retail version. So no one is going to produce all those weird drivers for a tiny niche market like webcams and video capture. MS says its only going to be OEM'd and they expect the OEM's to produce any additional drivers (as well as handle the first line of support btw...) so unless Dell or HP or someone starts selling these and they happen to have a PC package that needs them your out of luck for right now.

We can hope that the sales volume increases on amd64 systems and MS will reconsider in the future but thats about your only hope right now.

I'd say it's about 50% right... Here's why...

It really doesn't matter that it's OEM-only, the Retail market only makes up a small fraction of total sales for Microsoft. The real reason why XP x64 isn't going to catch on yet is because there isn't a Home Edition.

All the big hardware vendors like Dell, Sony, IBM (and numerous competitors that I can't mention) are all busy as beavers right now building their new business products around this OS.

I would guess that common x64 drivers will all be classified as "stable" probably in a 2 or 3 months time. It won't take big hardware manufacturers like Nvidia, ATI, Intel and Creative long at all to get their drivers into tip-top shape. It's the smaller, less enthusiastic ones you need to worry about!

The real x64 wave is not going to hit until Longhorn arrives in mid-2006.

MCSA? I think you mean't MSDN, in which case.. yes, at the moment only MSDN subscribers can download it.

RTM means Release to Manufacturing... so as we speak millions of the XP x64 CDs are being pressed.

Thanks lol whoops I couldn't remember the letter order so i looked down the page for a thread I thought had the right letters in the title, guess i picked the wrong one!

It's not free, it's never been free - only the beta's were free. Now that it is finished you have to buy it like any other Microsoft OS. That said, if you have a regular copy of XP Professional you can trade it in, in exchange for the x64 Edition - and as far as I know this IS free.
