The Witcher ?

Swordplay, melee and a bit of magic.
It's third person but you can change the camera distance. You can also opt for 'click on a spot to move there', or use wasd and your mouse.

I really don't like the fact that you can't jump!

The main thing that's bugging me is that I can't play with max display distance, it gives me about 30fps in fights. :(

Can you guys run it maxed out with no lag?

When people say things like that it makes me wonder if were playing the same game.

exactly the same thought, i played it for 10 minutes before i was so appalled i uninstalled it. this is how it played in my view, boobs........click to hit a guy, do i have to click on that guy again? no not really, it just auto attacks, if i click again at the specified moment i get an extra attack, woo freaking hoo. wait i can change attack styles how magnificantly boring. ok i've had a few fights, killed a few more people.......it seems i should talk to the chick with the overflowing boobs again. is there story here, or is it all talking to chicks with great racks.

i couldn't see a single thing redeeming about it, in the end, quests, story the main thing you'll do in an action game is, fight. the combat system is beyond horrific. it might be the most boring and uninvolving combat i've ever seen in a game.

Pretty sure this is why age of conan will fail. people seem to think banging chicks in games is fantastic, and seeing lots of fake boobs seems to stop people noticing a awful game behind the boobs. just get lots of kids playing these games thinking its cool.

EDIT:- forgot to mention, the one other important thing when you're running around a world a lot is camera and movement, both of which again, are ludicrously bad. in all games like these the VERY FIRST thing you sort out to be easy, smooth and good are camera and movement, then combat. it fails completely at the most basic levels, the rest doesn't matter to me. even if it was a great story hidden somewhere deep in one of those womens corsets. i'm not going to play 10 hours, or 100 hours of a game thats just painful to control.

Ok i have downloaded this demo ive extracted most of it so its the actual installer for demo as im low on hard drive space. I attempt demo installation on i drive where it has 3.2 gig free but i keep getting a bloody not enough space error.

I have only 700mb on c drive and i cant get any more out of it. 3.2 gig for a 2gig demo should be more than enough i hope the readme at gamespot is wrong for the demo needing 8.5gig space lol as i obviously think thats for full game lol.

So help me please someone to get this troublesome demo installed to my 3.2gig available space drive partition.

You forgot the horrendous load times and in the rubbish textures, but it seems a pretty good summing up. I'm trying to persevere because game can grow on you. I can see some good points, but not many. And the people who say it's better than Oblivion are clearly after a completely different kind of game. Mind you , there are deluded people who think Gothic 3 is better than Oblivion. Even this game is better than G3.

Wow, that's how I felt about the combat lol. Right at the start in the castle bits I was like wtf, this isn't fun fighting. On my last save my char is still in the village on Act 1. I'll check the game out later today methinks.

Have you ever played an RPG before? Compared to NWN, Dungeon Siege, Diablo etc. the combat is much more involved and fluid. In these games you clicked repeatedly without timing and pretty much stayed still during the fight. In this at least you can move, jump over and avoid while timing your blows. It's also quite spectacular to watch in motion with visceral cuts and fancy spins that make it much more attractive than any user controlled fighting game has. I can only assume you've played it in over the shoulder perspective and misunderstood why it's not like Napper Basher 5 or some other dumbed down console game for slack jawed, button mashing retards. It's not an "action game"!

You gave it 10 minutes and from your description never got out of the tutorial so you're criticism of the game is like me calling you a brain atrophied moo-child solely on the basis of your first sentence. As such your "insights" into the game and dismissal of it in its entirity is absolute ba-hang.

Meridian, you're wrong! The textures are far from rubbish, infact it's a very beautiful game. The artwork that's gone into it is astounding and I screenshotted like a loon throughout. The load times were a problem but that's been fixed. It's now much faster than, for example, oblivion's.
Since you mentioned it Gothic 3 has just had a patch and i've started playing it again (20 hrs in) and while it's still a very flawed game (combat especially) there are a lot of things in it which are better than Oblivion.
More detailed enviroments. It's not as pretty in some ways but there appears to have been a lot more care and design gone into creating the world than Oblivion's which felt like it had been designed by a computer. There's also a stronger atmosphere and (mostly) sensible placing of things like caves and less repetition. The towns are bigger, better integrated into the surroundings and bustling with life and industry thanks to the mass of working and idle animations. See a smith make a sword, a slave carry rocks etc. Oblivion was really lacking in this and the world felt very static because of it. The dynamic and seamless world in Gothic is very impressive and the bestiary is extensive. There's masses of animals to hunt and fear from hares, turtles and snakes through wild boars, crocodiles and velociraptors to giant trolls and shadow beasts. The variety of and difference in size puts Oblvion to shame.

There's a lot of bad points as well and things Oblivion did a lot better but without the showstoopping bugs and performance headaches its no longer a slam dunk which is better. I'm certainly having a lot of fun in the G3 world.

Edit: Oh yeah, from a purely aesthetic point I think the way G3 handled distant land is much better than Oblivion (unmodded). The DoF effect makesthe lower res far land much more pleasing on the eye than Oblivion's blotchy pixellated mess and having the buildings included means less oblivion style pop up of towers and castles.

Its mainly the story to play for, but i also find the combat side fun i just started using my spells to knock walls down and create traps which was great and the storyline is one of the best i have played yet, the animations look great in combat and always change if you update your combat tree.

really its hardly differant from any other RPG that isnt turn based. but i would recommend it to anyone, simply one of my favorite games i have played in a long while.

I bloody love the witcher, and i didnt like oblivion at all (i own it, played it for a number of hours, i prefer more linear games).

Its not all about boobs and crap, the game has a brilliant story, the towns actually feel populated, on night times people go to bed etc.

Its a great game. dont dismiss it people! :)

I feel the same way. I got out of the dungeon/underground area at the beginning and was like, "now what?"

The answer being, of course: "Whatever you want". Well, almost anyway. That's what most of us like about it. Lord knows the rest of the game holds your hand enough, without the main plot being out of your control as well.

I like to be told a story, or to follow a path. Oblivion is impressive for being so open, but its too open ended. It would be better suited as an mmo due to its scale, at least then there would be people to encounter on ya travels.

I love RPG games, but couldn't get into The Witcher, found the combat bloody annoying at best. The item system was awful and I found that most features didn't even have a introduction or tutorial.

Played a couple of hours till I shagged that girl in the mill and got a souveneer card with boodies on, which was quite nice.

Can see why people like it, but it's not for me.

Yeah, Oblivion felt totally barren of npcs compared to The Witcher, which was teeming with life. What I liked also was even generic npcs had something interesting to say/have the odd quest available etc. That sort of thing is more immersive imo than a big wide open sandbox with not much in it.

Most of the generic NPCs I've encountered so far cycle through about three items. Much like Ob except they you don't have the whole game stop while they do it. Roughly the same as the random stuff you get in Ob if NPCs are just chatting amongst themselves.

And what I also find interesting is that one of the biggest criticisms of Ob from the experienced ES players was how small and crowded Cyrodiil is!

So who's up for an Oblivion v. Witcher thread?
