For the last few years I have used the pre-applied stuff with my self build's (MX-2 on my AC freezer 7 pro), or the intel stock cooler on another system.

I have bought a scythe mini ninja for my HTPC build but it doesn't come with pre-applied, so I thought I would buy some new stuff, either AS5 or MX-2, I am thinking MX-2.

I have some VERY old Arctic silver 5 (it must be atleast 4-5 years old now), and I think I just spread it over the core (pentium 4 days), with a old credit card and had good results.

As I am a bit rusty, can any one guide me in the best way to apply MX-2? Its going to be put on a C2D E5200. (I did check arctic coolings website, but their guide is for a GPU. The arctic silver's guide has guides for different CPU'S.)

I did this recently with MX-2 and applied it using the spread it thinly technique of old. Seems to be working pretty well for me.

Cool, I will go with that method then and hope it works well! Especially as I am going to be running passive lol! What did you use to spread it may I ask? I used the search feature earlier and it seems people have started using a freezer/sandwich bag and spreading it with their finger?

So you put a thin "line" down the middle of the CPU as shown on arctic silvers website, but used MX-2?

I just had another look at Arctic Coolings guide. Its not a GPU, can even see a PCI-E x16 and x1 in the piccie, shows I didnt pay much attention lol. Will I be able to "twist" the mini ninja once its been installed with the 775 socket clips? The guide shows to just put a blob in the middle of the CPU.

a thin line down the middle usually is enough making sure its dead center so the pressure spread covers the complete plate.

Some people are under the impression more the better when infact it does more damage than good!

this is how i usually do mine however this is my way and dont take it as an official application method

Thanks for the diagram. I think I will give the top left pic a try with the mx-2, although I wont put the paste right up to the edge of the cpu (so that it doesn't squeeze over it in to the socket).

I'd apply it the same way that they tell you to apply AS5, just google "applying arctic silver 5" for the .pdf

The only issue I have with applying it like AS5 is it is a little bit thicker and I would worry that it may not spread correctly, but I guess it's worth a try.

Let us know how you get on if you do apply it like AS5.

It would be very interesting to see some comparisons between the blob/smear/line techniques. Seems everyone is in different camps regarding which is the better method.

I really hope the line technique works because I dont want to have to take the heatsink off again (I found the 775 clips are annoying with my arctic freezer 7). I still might go with the blob in the middle like arctic coolings website shows though.

so are you saying that you just put a blob or a line and dont spread it? or you start off laying it like that, and then spread it from there?
