Just a quick question.

In every ones opinion. What is now the best thermal compound on the market???

I'm about to do a upgrade in a few weeks and I was just going to get another tube of Arctic Silver 5 but that seems to have been out for ages.

There must be something better out there by now.

Arctic Cooling MX-1 Thermal Compound

OR

ShinEtsu Microsi thermal paste

Heard good things about these to, I'm out of AS5 and will be going for one of these next time!

if you apply the thermal compound properly (ie, not just putting a big blob on your cpu) then what compound you will use out of the 3 already mentioned will make little to no noticible difference. Artic silver 5 may be old, but thats because its good, it doesnt need improving on, its already nearly pure silver, which is good.

MX-2 and Shinetsu are the two best, LiquidPro is better but needs to be removed with metal polish (basically abrasive) to be removed.

Shinetsu is a pain to spread though, so it will only perform if you manage to get it right.

Arctic Silver 5 can be beat by quite a margin.

Sorry to dig this thread out again but are you saying that the instructions on AS website about the thin line down the centre on a core 2 duo are incorrect?

As I used those instructions to fit mine?

The thin line is only best if you haven't lapped the CPU as the centre of the core won't make contact with the cooler if you use the thin layer method.

Jokester

Toothpaste!

It's an old one, but if you ignore the insanity of the 'alternative' thermal pastes, it's actually not a bad article.

The general gist was that there isn't much between the pastes, both temperature wise and ease of application.

Hey

Thought id resurect this thread rather than creating a new one

Im a bit of a newb when it comes to cooling, and have just recieved a Arctic Freezer 7 Pro, remover / cleaner and some AS5. Well, got that far on my own, im impressed, stuck now :D I think i know what im doing, id just like some conformation as the heatsink and the thermal paste instructions conflict with each other.
The heatsink has a grey / silver substance on it, im guessing that is the manufacturers thermal compound and needs to be removed with the above cleaner and say, a paper towel? So do i then put the AS5 on the chip? and the heatsink should be a clean surface with nothing on it when placing them together? or have i got it completley wrong :)

Thx in advance for any replies

Just leave the AC MX-1 on there - it's VERY good stuff. They supply a lot of it just in case your heatspreader is concave. Just fix it down and enjoy.

oh, ok cheers......................anyone wanna buy some AS5? :D kiddin

Im guessing it will need replacing at some point in the future, any idea's on how long?
