Hi All,

Finally got all my kit now and just looking for advice. When I've put AS3 or whatever on I usually have spread it all over the CPU heatspreader with a credit card. I happened to be looking around at stuff and saw a link to the artic silver website and advice for quad cores to put a line of stuff across and then put the heatsink on as I guess it only needs the best contact for where the actual cores are?

Is this the same for i7 quad's or should I do 2 lines across and then mount the heatsink or ignore it all and use my credit card or wrapped finger method to spead it all over.

Cheers

If you're certain that both the chip and the heatsink are completely flat then you can spread it out.

Otherwise follow the manufacturers recommendation for quad-cores.

Reseated mine about 3 times today. I was, and to some degree, still am getting about a 5 degree difference between cores. In the end I used OCZ freeze instead of ac5. I just used a small blob in the centre after sessions of speading it flat and using the line method. Temps are down, but still have a variance in heat with the cores. This is after testing with HT and turbo turned off.

This is pretty common on quad cores, my q6600 currently sits at, 29-26-25-21 across the cores, this is even after lapping the cpu.

There are instructions on the Arctic Silver website.

NOTE: The Core i7. Please use the quad core instructions at left with one modification: If you orient the CORE i7 chip where the triangle marker is up and to the left it will put the cores on a horizontal plane. With the cores (quad) being on a horizontal plane you will apply a horizontal line of thermal compound as depicted in our quad core instructions.
