Ive got a e6600 and plan to use the stock fan for the time being, the bottom off the HSF has a grey paste on the bottom. Ive got a tube off arctic silver, so I need to remove the paste on the HSF.

Whats the best way to do this?

a lint free cloth usualy works.. a lot of people use diffrent solutions but if you havn't got anything handy a lint free cloth will be fine

Thanks, and then is it a case off applying a thin layer off arctic sliver on to the top(sliver side) off the CPU? Do you apply a blob in the middle then use a ruler or some straight edge to thin it out?

If you are going to spread the paste then make sure you spread it as thinly as possible to get the best results.

Yup think I did as well as I could, putting the CPU in was a bit stressfull!

Does spreading the paste work best? Scythe manuals suggest that the pressure of the heatsink when it touches the paste is enough to spread the paste, especially if you just turn the heatsink a couple of degrees each way before seating it.

I use that method, it avoids air pockets getting trapped.

or a sock :D

ive used a sock before... all these things people use. i think the cpu i have now was last cleaned with my work t-shirt i was wearing it at the time

I was using the paste on the stock fan, but since ive had to RMA the MoBo then the grey stuff has dried on the CPU and the heatsink, do i need to get some more thermal paste on there or will it be fine to just slam it back on?

clean the grey stuff of by your prefered method, then apply a small amount of CPU paste...do NOT just "slam it back on" ;)
