Ello,

I've just bought a Thermalright ultra-120 (to use with a new e2160) and I Installed it sideways (so the fan is mounted on the top or bottom of the heatsink.) and attached a fan to the bottom blowing cold air through the heatsink into the psu and out of the case.

I thought this would be a good idea, but It seems my temps are a little high, At idle im getting 39-41C and 50-52C under load. I've seen a lot of other people who have almost 10 degrees cooler.

Would it be a good idea to twist the heatsink 90 degrees so the fan is blowing out to the exaust fan in my case? Also, It's the first time i've applied thermal paste and read about people saying to use a rice grain sized blob of paste ,also another way which is to make a thin line of paste in the middle of the contact patch. I tried the line of paste and I'm thinking that I've applied a little too much paste, so would a rice sized blob be sufficient for such a big heatsink?

I've also heard about lapping, I think this is where the contact surface of the heatsink is concave (right word? :p ) and people sand it down until its nice and even. Is this a big problem with thermalright-120's or should I not bother?

Cheers :D

Well i got my 120 extreme fitted the same way as you with the cooling fan blowing air up towards the PSU

Mine idles at 24-26c and at load max is 35c

Infortunatly i read the recent problems on the concave base after i installed the cooler, but did'nt notice anything out the ordinary when i installed it to the board. Would be a tight squeeze to fit it vertical tbh

On e6600

Think I'll remount it vertically as i think there's enough room. I wont use as much thermal paste this time either and see what results I get :) .

I finally remounted the heatsink Vertically. I also didnt use half as much thermal paste and temps are now 5-10 degrees cooler :) .

I had to muscle the PSU a bit as there wasnt enough room to fit it vertically so the heatsink is almost touching the psu. But overall im happy :D

Always use as little thermal paste as possible. Large amounts will give you high temps.

It came with an am2 bolt on kit not 939. But yeh ive still got it. Although it dosent come with a backplate, I think you either buy it seperately or use an old metal one from a previous heatsink.
