Sold my car Saturday just gone, chap from Sheffiled bought it, and his mate in Cheadle was doing the work to it.

They decided they would drive it home and see how far it got (not far as it overheats after about 3 miles).

He said they made about 3 or 4 stops to let it cool down (and it was DRINKING oil and water).

So anyway he said he had put a thread up on MK3OC about progress of the car, this was yesterday...

Heres the WIP of Simons new chariot (until he gets bored again), an M plate Astra Sport that we picked up on Saturday afternoon from Phil W with a very upset and ill feeling donkey (cooked XE). The drive home was quite eventful with the engine consuming most of its oil and coolant several times with 2 or 3 stops over the 30 mile journey for cool downs and top ups! We made it about 5 miles from home before the coolant fitting blew out from the side of the head spelling came over - by then there was next to no compression when turned over. So back to the garage to get the straight bar and drag it back home. Simon had never towed or been towed before but we had no big dramas and got home safely, even though quite late on by then. Luckily for Simon (and Will) the takeaway next door to the garage was still open which satisfied their stomachs after a long afternoon.
With lots of rice pudding in the cooling system, pressurised hoses that were staying cold with a very hot engine that knocked it was decided to rip it out rather than gamble on putting it right with just headgasket problems. So, out with the old and in with the new has been todays task.

Mmmm mayo...

I was very impressed in the short time they had it, how much work was done. Needless to say, i'm kinda kicking myself now that i didn't get the work done myself, but i could forsee a never ending list of problems, so it was good to get rid of it when i had the chance :)

i take it all the difficult work was done on the first engine swap so it dropped straight in?

i take it new engine is still a 150bhp?

Still exactly the same power, IIRC they put the F20 gearbox in rather than the F18 that was in it, according to Liverpool Lad they made little differnce though so nevermind :)

The hard work was done, but Chris said the loom was quite butchered so they put parts of a proper loom in its place :)

I must have missed some previous posts... because I had no idea the HG was knackered. I thought you'd had it replaced just after getting the car.

Still, that's some quick engine swapping for ya. Good on those guys for doing so. Makes you smile when people look after your old cars :)

The guy who bought my 220 has done quite a bit of work to it. It's actually got quite a nice spec to it now.

Yeah, when the head was done the guy used the old head bolts (long story) so it ended up not making a proper seal on the HG. That and the fact they drove it back, and it was overheating after 3 miles probably nackered a LOT of stuff.
