Oddly enough I don't remember reading news stories about those who crashed at silly speeds? Are there any, or is this simply blown out of proportion like so many other speed-related 'issues'?

"Look these people were caught doing 140mph, OMG we must put up more speed cameras"

But none of them crashed, maybe it's not as dangerous as you make out..?

Paul Witters, from motoring organisation the AA, said: "We need to find out what happened to these people, as a message to others.

"The big question is 'what happened to the offenders?'. We would like to know if they were caught and prosecuted.

"It's important as a message to others who might consider this, that it probably ended in a driving ban and perhaps a jail sentence."

How is this a 'big question' as he puts it - surely these people, if identified, were all required to attend court?

The man needs a proper job.

I've heard of people crashing at silly speeds in low limits, i.e 70/80 in a 30, never heard of anyone crashing at very high speeds on a motorway but I guess it probably has happened at some point.

I've set two cameras off at 140/145MPH abroad and know someone who set one off at considerably more than that.

So, I suspect the highest recorded speeds in the UK often go unprosecuted due to cameras being set off by foreign registered cars, but the police are obviously not going to want to shout about it as people would be outraged at no action being taken. Although that may well all change in a few months, according to recent news articles.

Yeah likewise have heard of people crashing at silly <100mph speeds in built-up areas, but not at much faster speeds on motorways.

I seem to recall a motorbike accident on the A47 last year who was doing something ridiculous like 140mph (it's a single carriageway road), someone pulled out of a junction when the road was clear and in the space of about 1.5s he'd appeared, had no time to react and died pretty much instantly. The family released the helmetcam video as a 'public information video'.

'In East Grinstead, West Sussex, a driver was caught on camera doing 128mph in a 30mph zone.'

I have never driver the road but i'd guess that this is more likely to lead to an incident in comparison to 146 in a 70. Unless it was just a completely wrong speed limit for the area in question

I think I'm a better driver "at speed" than when I'm pootling along at 50-60mph where I find it virtually impossible to concentrate 100% all the time. However when I hit the loud pedal I'm definitely concentrating at 110%+ which is why I can only do it in short (<10min) bursts otherwise it gets too difficult to maintain that level and mistakes could happen.

If driving fast was the biggest factor in accidents then the German Autobahns should littered with hundreds of dead drivers daily who are driving over 70mph. I believe it's inattention which is the biggest culprit and speed just aggravates that.

It's definitely much easier to remain focussed at higher speeds, both through self-preservation instincts and (I would imagine) through constant vigilance for speed cameras/police cars :p

It was 100mph and the driver got prosecuted because he admitted to not looking further than his bonnet.

146mph is a great speed, it's about the maximum you can carry through the Tag section on the Midland toll road without taking the barrier out....

...I read somewhere

Props to 128 in a 30, breaks my record

Though this did amuse me the other day, didn't know hire cars came with telematics!
