Thieving apps?

Do you guys worry about free android apps, and regularly check the access option of an app before you download it.
A lot of the apps I have install willingly have access to contact information, but do not require it.
For instance a golf gps distance app, has access to contact information, but why?

Is there a risk i'm being used to gain advertising ideas and phone numbers?

Most apps allow you to send data to contacts/email etc and patch into the system for various other functions.

It's not an issue to be worried about really.
