Things I hate about Vista

I honestly cannot stand this OS for more than 5 minutes, this isn't fanboyism or whatever else you want to say, it's my personal opinion on the operating system.

It's slow to start-up, quite a bit slower than XP, it would seem microsoft has tried to hide this by using a hybrid sleep option as the default shutdown method.

The GUI, why does everything need to be animated and fancy? All this people longing after Aero, don't bother it's ugly and harsh on the eyes, why must microsoft insist on this truetype rubbish aswell, I like my text sharp not blurry. Also, compared to the classic style of XP, it takes up a lot more screen estate.

The control panel is a complete and utter mess now, you'd do well to find anything in that jumble of icons, things aren't where you'd expect them to be, maybe I'm a little unwilling to learn a new layout, but there was nothing wrong with the tried and tested control panel in XP.

Nothing seems to fit together, the layout of things vary's wildly between applications, it feels like each dev team were shut in a dark room and not allowed to talk to the others, it's like a patchwork quilt.

You cant as much as sneeze without user access control halting the system and asking you if you're sure you'd like to perform the action, I bloody well just double clicked it, what do you think?

That's it for now, I'm sure I'll think of some other things to complain about.

I love it :) hey the Santa hats have gone! Turn off UAC, disable Aero, change control panel to classic, hey let your hair down have a play with it ;) Been using it as my main OS for a few months now. Will not be going back to XP. A few drivers require maturing but I can wait for that (I fully expect them to be ready for official public release).

Agreed with the last point you made.

However I do find myself clicking on Vista RC2 rather than XP every time I boot up.

It's great so far for me ... everything is so accessible now.
PLaces that used to take a while navigating to, is so much quicker now.

Dunno what's wrong for you but it starts up a little bit faster than XP for me.

I actually like the GUI it's about time Windows had something to rival OSX. As for truetype I'm guessing you are referring to ClearType being enabled by default, this actually looks really good on TFT's but not so much on CRT's and if you have a CRT you could just disable it.

It's not so bad when you switch to classic view although I have no idea why they changed the name of Add/Remove Programs that just seems silly.

I have to agree with you here although it's not that bad, have a look at OSX it has different skins/themes on certain programs never mind a consistent UI.

You could always just switch it off although it is at it's worst when you are initially configuring your pc after install.

Aero is my favourite part of vista, it looks great, going back to XP everything looks so dull and lifeless.
The new start menu is good too, the rest of it though I can take it or leave it.

windows 2000 will always be best operating system from microsoft. everything they released since then is crap like vista. i just cannot understand why should anyone upgrade. i hate vista i bloody hate it, nothing is bloody right with it? i've been using it for in hope i will get to like it but it will never happen. i always turn off all the stupid eye candy to run it. for the first time ever i'm considering moving to apple mac

Don't forget that a hell of a lot of people said bad things about XP when it was released, including me.

Now i think XP is the best OS micrsoft have ever released, in 1 > 2 years i think most people will be wondering how they managed without Vista, i also think that Vista will probably mature into the best OS ever released by microsoft if people are willing to give it a chance, which most will.

I know there are teething issues with Vista, but, that's the case with all new OS's, when service packs start appearing then Vista, i think, will become the new champion OS for microsoft.

Lets face it, microsoft have given us the choice to disable things that maybe anoying, it's not all bad.

Hate it or love it, Vista is here to stay! Only options you have are:
  1. Stick with what you have running at the moment, but for how long (software, support, etc)?
  2. Give Vista a year to mature, etc & in the meantime upgrade/build/buy a system that will be more than capable of running it :)
I for one am going for option 2

Amen... I hate having to use XP at work. Win2K is what I use at home. It's lean, quick and extremely stable. I love it :) I tend to be a bit of a minimalist what with being a unix power user/admin on the side anyhow - so don't go for flashy gimmicks.

I don't understand the whole reason behind 3D GUIs etc with Vista - surely an OS shouldn't be eating up so much in the way of processing power and resources? Why not just use pretty, less greedy 2D interfaces which "look" 3D?

I'm hanging on a year like some others. Let everybody else suffer the bugs, glitches, security vulnerabilities etc first :)

Believe me, OS X has nothing to worry about, unless Leopard turns out to be completely pants.
Although to be fair you can't buy OSX unless you buy an Apple PC at the same time ;)

Now that's an expensive OS :D

As for ClearType looking blury... if you have a CRT you need to disable it as it will not work with CRTs (but who still has one of them anyway :p). Secondly you need to tune it to your eyes as everyone colour perception is slightly different. Google ClearType tuner and it should be the first link :)

As for your other comments, I switch UAC off and control panel to classic layout. Once that is done I find Vista to be great, no problems with boot time etc.

Cleartype is crap, it blurs the text in a fake attempt to make it look smooth, looks awful on any monitor tbh, it hurt my eyes just to look at my pda when it was enabled.

If I ever upgrade to vista for dx 10, it will be home basic, less crap installed, less space wasted, no aero gimmick ui taking up all the memory and slowing the pc down and making it look like it was designed for 3 year olds, simple and professional is what I need, not huge bloated icons. And of course something like nlite to remove the junk m$ install.
