things that would class as a major in a driving test?

Being in the correct lane (i.e. - keeping left). I failed on my first test because a second lane appeared, making the road a dual carriageway, and I didn't move over to the left so that was classed a major.

Also posting in the correct forum I'd class a major ;)

Ahh! Sorryyy!! Still getting used to OC forums! :(

Well last driving lesson I had some pheasants walk out near the car when we were going down county lanes.. They moved luckily but had I needed to slam the brakes on to avoid hitting them would that have then failed me?

If you slowed or stopped in a controlled manner, then I would see that as a positive, not a failure.

If however you smushed pheasant all over the road... karma's gonna get ya :)

Disclaimer: Pheasants are stupid. They're also cute.

I got a major for driving down a single lane road which had parked cars all along my side at the head of a queue of traffic. A car came the other way when I was half way down the road (from a side road) and I had nowhere to go. The other car reversed back into the side road and let me past with no issue but apparently because the parked cars were on my side of the road they had the right of way.

When the examiner told me I failed for this I asked him what the right thing to do in that situation was and he refused to answer. To this day I don't know what else I could have done.

I'm not sure that's true. I thought it was a case of even if the cars are on your side of the road if you've committed you have right of way?

As you'd already committed to the manoeuvre before the opposing car had even appeared at the junction, and there was no gap in the cars on the left for you to slip into to allow him to pass, I cannot see what else you could have done.
Of course, if the opposing car had emerged before you reached the parked cars then its a different story :D

If your committed, does he really want you to have to reverse all the way back? Doesn't sound right to me unless there was a gap you could have pulled into?

As stated above major is things like cutting someone up, running a light, clipping a kerb... The list goes on!

Yeah had a few now and should be test ready within a month or two.

I would ask my driving instructor more but bringing up doubt in your driving ability seems to be a good way of getting given more lessons!

Well if you are doubting your driving ability, maybe you do need more lessons!

2 years ago you could fail for not indicating correctly at a roundabout (in particular multi-lane and going straight on requiring an indication to the right then left.), according to my driving instructor it was a big thing they were failing people on in Oxford especially since they have that big one up by Headington.

Ask your driving instructor - if hes decent he will have extensive knowledge of what his previous students have failed on.

I passed first time, but that was a while ago, and I think they've got a bit fussier since (theory and hazzard perception certainly have!)

that said, I thought I'd got a major pretty early in my test; as I was turning in on a junction just after a blind corner, someone came round aforementioned blind corner far too fast, so I just did whatever I could to not get hit (dropped it to 2nd and floored it :D ), obviously I figured this sort of aggressive driving would be a major, so after that I just relaxed and drove around town for the remaining 30 mins, not trying to do it 'right'.

got to the end of my test, and he told me I'd passed. shocked, I asked about the incident on the corner, and he smiled and said "well I had to give you a minor because you were a bit heavy on the throttle, but the way I saw it he was in the wrong, not you."

so I'd advise just that, treat it like any other lesson you have had near to your test: examineer tells you where to drive, you drive there, the less you overthink it, the more natural and confident you'll appear.

another 2 things I know a few people who got caught out on:
- at a stop sign, ALWAYS fully engage the handbrake (it's a major if you don't AFAIK)
- emergency stop test; you really need to react fast, <1 second hesitation is enough to fail you on this

wot, you don't need to handbrake at a stop sign, you just need to come to a complete stop

also they don't do the emergency stop test if you have traffic behind you, for obvious reasons, so if you drive slow and cause a tailback on your test, you can avoid having to do it ;)

Just a little pointer, my wife failed her 1st test as somebody pulled out from her left while she was on a mum roundabout. I'm not quite sure why she failed for that as I would have had it out with the examiner.

Its not that I doubt my ability, I just know driving instructors sometimes will do way more lessons than needed to bleed you dry.. So I hadn't asked him much on the matter in case he uses it as an excuse to work me for a bit extra.. He seems nice but doesn't everyone when you're giving them money :P

Some examiners are just arses lol. :p

The examiner for my test liked how he could check himself out in the plethora of mirrors my instructor had in his car. Didn't mind - read: Didn't see - me readjusting the passenger mirror whilst driving either.

He also got me to pull over on a hill - which I thought was a really stupid place - and ended up being instructed to do an emergency stop just over the brow. Another thing I thought was stupid, but just did as told. Reversing around a corner I also had to do, something I will never repeat and think is stupid.. :D

Hey ho, 1st timer, etc.. ;)

You could always make a point of asking him to brush you up on some of your weaker points, just to make sure..

Money well spent IMO

Either that or go out with your parents a lot more before your test so you relax more
