Things to do in London on Marathon day?

Science museum is rubbish these days.

Twenty posts in and nobody has suggested taking your friend up the Oxo Tower. GD, you disappoint me.

Lol I was going to but that joke usually only works for Londoners

First get away from Stratford as quickly as possibly. It’s a hell scape.

Serious answer - I'd be looking at museums, or take the fam to Harrods for lunch or something.
He’s in east London and of course people are suggesting another 1hrs journey to the other side of London, lol :D

OP you could walk around the Olympic Park (don’t know what there is to see), you could go and join the hipsters at Hackney Wick along the canal/river I believe there’s lots of bars and coffee shops - if it’s a nice day.

Honestly Spitalfields is probably the best shout so far off the top of my head.

Edit: I don’t really rate Timeout but here’s some ideas: https://www.timeout.com/london/things-to-do/the-best-things-to-do-in-east-london Restaurant reccos look a little outdated.

We did Stratford for the first time recently and I can highly recommend getting back on the DLR/Train/Plane and leaving ASAP.

I was going to suggest Greenwich for the park, the hundreds of restaurants and the Cutty Sark, but the Cutty Sark is closed due to the marathon.

The Olympic Park is rubbish unless you’re a West Ham supporter or you want to see just how ugly the Anchor Mittal thing is in person.

Stratford is a dump, but a good place to park if you’re not driving a flash/expensive car. Depending where you’re coming in from, there’s the Epping branch of the Central Line stations that should have lots of parking spaces on a Sunday, but you are looking at an extra 20-25 minutes on the Tube before linking up with the DLR at Stratford.

Go visit borough market (just near london bridge tube station, only a few mins from stratford on the tube), loads of excellent food stalls selling all sorts. Also the shard is there but there will probably quite a queue for the roof tour that day.

Sorry, I didn't mean it to read like: "I need more from you"

I just meant I'll have a lot of hours to kill and Spittlefields will only fill some of it. I'm not too au-fait with the area.
Haha all good, sometimes hard to convey what you mean in text form, can also be taken the wrong way.

You might be better off doing the Science museum another time, make a day of it and also visit V&A, Natural History museum etc. Not sure what the Science museum is like these days though , I last went about 8 years ago. If you were meeting your friend at the finish point it might make more sense, I guess it depends if you don't mind the extra journeys.

Pretty spoiled for food choices in Spitalfields, trouble is there is not much else unless you like shopping. Could visit the farm, I've not been but it might be worth a look.

Honestly it's fine if you're a gangly youth of a certain demographic that enjoys carrying round a blade and wearing a balaclava in the middle of the day :)

If I was OP I'd go to Hawksmoor Spitalfields, have a Shakey Pete in the bar first and treat myself to a slap up steak lunch with half a bottle of something red.

But in all seriousness, probably Spitalfields then Brick Lane and hang around the Truman Brewery, Rough Trade etc. is a decent way to spend an afternoon.

Thank me later
Burger and Beyond is better, they even took over the P&B site in Soho ;)

I think your best bet would be to get on a tube from Stratford and get towards Liverpool street way, that way you got;
Tons of food and drink to choose from
Spitalfields markets
Van Gogh exhibit

Can change at Liverpool and go towards bank or tower of london way for a view of the brown water and a few bridges!
Surely some boat experiences on the go tomorrow from tower of london if you want a meal and a chill on a boat for 90 mins or whatever it is.

Love Burger and Beyond but think I still prefer P&B tbh

Bleecker Burger was the best a few years back imo, but some bizarre law made them stop selling their Bleecker black burger and they've seemingly gone downhill since :(
Fair enough, I've never managed to get to Bleecker yet!
or tower of london way
Actually, as a Londoner and someone who generally stays away from touristy areas like they're full of plague... the Tower of London is by far the most impressive and best touristy thing I've ever done. You have to be into the history, mind.

ominous weather - fairish weather runner myself , not sure how much they pay for marathon entrance (just a lottery ?) so I'd cut my losses if it'll be pouring for duration, soggy feet/trainers

... coffee festival is actually adjacent to spitlefields

e: science museum is predominately for children ? but maybe the nostalgic computer section is good (no gfx card section?)
