We're off to Madrid for a few days at the end of August to celebrate our son's 18th, can anyone recommend some things to do, places to visit, nice restaurants, etc please.

We've got tickets to see Real Madrid (after spending silly money on them!), but looking to do some sight seeing too. Thanks.

If it’s your thing…The Prado or Thyssen-Bornemisza. The Reina Sofia is ok but only has Guernica, the rest is pretty awful
We always go the the Parc del Retiro and spend at least 2 afternoons in one of the bars slowly sipping beer or sangria. It’s super relaxing. There’s also an exhibition building there that can have some interesting stuff. And the Crystal Palace
The centre is very compact and you can walk everywhere
The Mercado de San Miguel is very commercialised/touristy, but definitely worth a visit. It’s very close to the Plaza Mayor which is ok for a drink in the evening. They both sit at the top of the street that has all the tapas bars that you should wander down and see what’s on offer
The Royal Palace is worth a visit, if it would be of interest
I keep getting recommended Sorolla’s House but haven’t been there yet
There’s so much choice when it comes to restaurants. The only one we go back to time and time again is Casa Julio for croquettas at lunchtime. Dirt cheap, very small, but does feel authentic, although the owner has had to respond to lazy negative Tripadvisor comments and now makes attempts at conversation in English which detracts! It also forces you away from the Gran Via through the Salamanca district
We had a great meal at Juana La Loca, but prebook and get google lens working
How useful this may be someone travelling with an 18 y/o, I don’t know
Ahh, just remembered the Naval Museum. Cheap and recently refurbished. Just right for an 18 y/o. It’s near the Parc
We love Madrid, it’s a great city

Edit: I knew I felt like I was repeating myself

I wholeheartedly recommend a guided food tour, over an afternoon/evening. Did one with friends for a stag do 10 years ago and we still rave about it. Was great value at the time.

Cheers, Madrid is a brilliant city. I'm just over in Morocco so it's a relatively easy trip for me and I always have a great time when I visit. You'll have a blast.

Here are a few recommendations from my trips:

The Main Sights:

  • Art Museums: If you're into art, the "Golden Triangle" is a must. The Prado is the world-famous one for classic art (Goya, Velázquez), and the Reina Sofía has modern art, including Picasso's Guernica, which is genuinely breathtaking to see in person.
  • Retiro Park: This park is the "lungs" of Madrid. It's huge and a perfect place to escape the bustle for an hour or two. You can rent a rowboat on the lake or check out the beautiful Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace).
  • Royal Palace: It's absolutely massive and worth seeing. The scale of it is incredible.
  • Plaza Mayor: You have to see the main square, it's a stunning piece of architecture. I'd recommend getting your photos and then finding somewhere else to eat – the restaurants right on the square are classic tourist traps and overpriced.
Food & Drink (The Best Part!):

  • Mercado de San Miguel: This is a must-do. It's a beautiful old iron-and-glass market right next to Plaza Mayor that's been converted into a gourmet tapas hall. It gets absolutely rammed and isn't the cheapest, but it's a fantastic experience for trying lots of high-quality tapas and wine in one place.
  • Tapas Crawl: For a more traditional experience, head to the La Latina neighbourhood, especially Calle Cava Baja. It's just a street lined with fantastic, authentic tapas bars. Just dive in and see what looks good.
  • Chocolate con Churros: This is a classic Madrid breakfast or late-night snack. The most famous place is Chocolatería San Ginés, which is open 24/7. It's an institution for a reason.
  • Bocadillo de Calamares: A calamari sandwich. It sounds a bit odd, but it's a local specialty and delicious. Grab one from a little bar near Plaza Mayor.
A Few Other Tips:

  • Sunset: For the best sunset view, head to the Temple of Debod. It's a genuine ancient Egyptian temple that was gifted to Spain. It's a very cool and popular spot as the sun goes down.
  • Walk: Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk for miles. The Metro is excellent and easy to use for longer distances. Madrid is super easy to do on your own, which is great. It's a bit different from back home in Morocco where using a local planner like https://stours.ma/ for bigger trips can be a real lifesaver.
  • Eat Late: Seriously. Don't go looking for dinner at 7 pm, most places will be empty. Things start getting lively for dinner around 9-10 pm.
Have a cracking time!
