appart from the obvious stuff can anyone reccomend anything to see/do?

and any good restaraunts to try?

really want to try some good spaghetti and meatballs especially :)

thanks.

I love Italian food. And just had meatballs. Found the perfect sauce.

Rum the only thing I would say is find the romantic castle. AWESOME!!!

don't know how to spell it. Collosem is rubbish. Weather over the years has ruined it and most is closed off.

Also when you Q up for sigh seeing. You may get approached by reps who will let you jump the Q and get in cheaper. Take it!!! We thought it was a con. But they take you up to ticket booths. Ans wait for you to pay!!

Went in March with my sister. Were there for 6 nights and that was plenty of time to do pretty much everything (all the touristy bits) in Rome.

Wednesday - Arrived Rome in the evening, found hotel and went out for a meal.
Thursday - Woke late (lunch time) and walked down to Colosseum via St Maria Maggiore church and St Pietro in Vincoli churches. Had a guided tour of Colosseum followed by tour of the Palatine. Had a quick bite to eat from a snack van (pizza sandwich omnom) then met up with our tourguide again for an evening "Secrets of Rome" tour, which included Michelangelo's fake and real tombs, a small church (seats 6 people) which is a replica of St Peters, Colonna M Aurelio, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps.
Friday - woke early to get Metro to Vatican for a tour. 2.5hrs of special(ish) access from the same tourguide we'd had the previous day. Lunch then round to St Peter's Square. Walk down to Caste S Angelo and walk back through Rome to our hotel via Pantheon, Trevi and Spanish Steps (this time in daylight).
Saturday - walked down to Colosseum again via San Pietro, this time popping inside to see Michelangelo's "Horned" Moses. Saw fancy arch next to Colosseum (can't recall name) then round to Circo Massimo and Mouth of Truth, then back to hotel.
Sunday - Metro to Flaminio and a nice walk around Villa Borghese park, visiting the replica of the Globe theatre, metro back to Spagna for evening meal then to a local bar for drinks.

I spent Monday in bed with a rotten cold unfortunately, then flight back on Tuesday. As we'd crammed in all the sights we didn't really miss out by not having a day out on the Monday.

To conclude, Rome is awesome, DO EVERYTHING.

Edit: Oh yeah, March is their off-season and everything was still uncomfortably busy, especially (obviously) the Sistine. Would hate to be there in the summer at peak time. :s

nothing to see in rome, nothing at all....
Actually, there is too much to see. The big problem is al the toursists, but easy enough to escape if you know where.

The guide books will help but seeing as you’ve got so much time spend a day in the Vatican and its museums. It is worth the effort. Also take a day out and visit Hadrian's Villa and the Villa D'este (Tivoli) with the fantastic fountain gardens. Not too far away and you could even drive there. :D

We went for 5 days last month and it was just amazing - so much history everywhere you turn.

We did:

Colosseum
Palantine
Roman forum
- you can get a 48 hour ticket for all 3 for 12 euro. Get the ticket from the palatine entrance as it's usually a much shorter queue than the colosseum.

Also saw the Trevi fountain, Spanish steps, Castel Saint D'angelo (awesome if you've played assassins creed!), pantheon, the argentine excavation where Julius ceasar was assassinated, several ice cream places and cafes.

We stayed in a retro apartment just around the corner from the colosseum. There are some nice restaurants around there in the back streets. One in particular I would really recommend but need to find the link!

Go and see the catacombs, they are a little way out of Rome but you can get there by bus. The wife and I found it really interesting, everything else in the city has been recommended already.

Most hotels in Rome give you a big tourist map and most places are within walking distance of each other so just get a map (it's like A3 in Size if I recall) and see each of those things. I only went for 3 days and had enough time to see everything on the map and in the Vatican so 8 days is plenty of time.

Go to The Capuchin Crypt, Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini (church) A church made up of monks bones if you like, quite interesting.

The Vatican.

Great place, plenty to do, plenty to eat, but best food prices just away from the hot tourist zones.

When me and my girlfriend went last year we saw:

The Pantheon, Roman Markets, Colleseum, Palatine, Roman Forums, St Peters/Vatican City, Gesu Church, St Giovanni, Trivi Fountain.... and so much more. We actually did really well for the six days we were there and saw quite a lot.

We relied on our guide book, which was really helped. It's selling for £7.50 on amazon. Well worth the buy: http://www.amazon.co.uk/DK-Eyewitne...=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1305712547&sr=1-4
