Think I need a better PSU...

So I just upgraded my system with a DFI nf4 ultra-d and a 1900xt.

I diecided my year old PSU could probably cut the mustard and didn't bother getting a new one.

Anyway I go to power on this morning and the thing won't come on until I flick the power switch at the back a few times and press the power button exactly as I flick the switch to on.

When I couldn't get the machine to power on I checked and the motherboard and it did have a power light on it.

The PSU is only rated at 21 amps so I figure my box (has an x-fi, wireless lan, x1900, oc'd opteron, 2 hd's and a dvd drive) could really do with a power boost.

In all fairness before I upgraded I was only using an x800 pro and used powered my dvd drive externally.

So what's the best PSU to go for? I'm looking for one that's not a bank breaker but has more than enough amps to get the job done as well as offering my components some protection from surges (if that's a possibility).

Thanks.

What make and wattage is your current psu?
You may not need a new one, or if its a decent make you could try it with your current psu and if its too much for it it will simply cut out and then you can replace it.

Avoid Hiper, they tend to blow up components when they die. Go for something from Enermax, Antec, FSP, Tagan, OCZ or Seasonic, all trusted manufacturers.

Antec Trio 650 Watt is what I finaly went for . Plenty of amps to go round, should last me a nice long time. At least I hope it does for the ton I just dropped on it

My 21 amp, 450 watt antec that I've used for ~18 months did me a great service so seems like a company worth investing in some more.

Zombi3, whats on the 3 12v rails (amps) of that Trio 650 please and whats the efficiency of it? Also is it quiet as i am on water? I have been looking at getting either one of those or the 700w OCZ beastie.

18 amp on each. So I believe that gives it 54 amps in total. I'll let you know how loud it is by tomorrow evening, but if its anything like my other antec then it'll be pretty quiet.

That's the most I ever spent on a psu. I'm not aloud to spend any more now so gotta be good. If you see me contemplating any other purchases stop me dead in my tracks!

Cheers for that. It should be quiet as it only has the 120mm fan.

I can't beleive you spent a ton on it though. I have found them for £76.

If we all told each other not to buy anything else we would'nt need a forum and it would be a boring place. This upgrading lark is addictive (and expensive) though. ;)

76.

Damn myself. I was so caught up in which to get I forgot all about price comparison sites.

Can get it for £86 next day delivered.

Too late now though, by the time I've sent it back I'd only be saving £10 ish. That and I don't feel comfortable running this pc on 21 amps in the mean time.

Your right about the addictive thing though. I'm puting an end to it for awhile.
