Hoping you can help.

I have just tried changing an existing blackberry's enterprise account to a new email address etc etc. This was my first time iv done this without starting it on a new handset etc.

Set them all up but now the phones lost all the previous contacts. What did i do? Any way of getting them back? Please help and save my ass :D

Ours are in outlook too, although i kind of deleted the AD account without realising.

Iv stuffed it havent i?

Why do people do this??????

Makes me want to kerb stomp peoples faces into the edge of their desks when they delete and recreate user accounts, its so incredibly dumb when its far easier just to amend the account than deal with all the issues around the fact that the user now has a new SID

Bet it wont be done again though ... experience!

OP, you might have some problems with people emailing your user using their autocomplete's in Outlook.

Easy tiger. Wrong side of the bed this morning?

The account apparently should never have been used - apparently i was told wrong.

But i bet your 'one of those guys' that never make mistakes

Yeah, all in good experience. Its a warehouse phone so luckily not that important. could have been the MD's which i was sorting the day before.

You can fix this.

a) use ad recover software to recover the AD account. Relink the AD account to his mailbox. If you have deleted the mailbox, firstly, wtf. IF you have deleted the mailbox it may still activate-able depending on exchange policy. ADRestore.NET
b) You should always backup a blackberry with desktop manager before doing any reactivation with new devices, especially when you are new to bes and bb.
c) if the outlook contacts are there then they will resync when you reactivate the bb.
d) if he is using the same sim card then some of the contacts may be on the sim card and they will move with the sim card.
e) put the old sim card back in the phone and make sure you copy any contacts on the phone memory to his sim card.

Best way to add new email addresses is just by adding a second smtp address to the smtp tab in AD. That way the user can keep the mailbox and ad account and then all you need to do is set the new smtp as primary address and you don't even need to reactivate a blackberry device when doing that.

If a user gets a new blackberry, all i do is backup the existing phone, move the sim card to the new phone. go to the user account in bes, generate a new activation password and activate the new device. easy.

Rarely! last one was around 3 years ago

in AD you are deleting objects that are a pain in the ass to get back, if you want to delete objects you disable them, move them, rename them as appropriate and put them aside until your sure

You need to have an eye on how to put things back if you are changing them, protecting your own ass should be very high on your list of priorities and this cant be the first time someone has told you this

The next biggest mistake people make is not actually figuring out the problem, far too many cowboys in our industry don't know what's going on and just start pressing buttons until it starts working. Its those cowboys that give the rest of us a bad name, IT as an industry demands people have more knowledge and skills than many others but doesn't get the respect or pay as a result. So when your a few more years into your career wondering why accountants and middle management yes men are getting more pay and respect than you keep it in mind.
