Think my 5870 has gone wrong

I say gone wrong rather than dead as it boots fine into Windows 7 (I can hear the intro sound and can shut down using the shortcut keys) but I have no display signal on my two 2209 Dells. The monitors simply go into power save saying no signal (connecting using the std DVI cables). I tested both monitors and cables using my laptops (VGA and DVI) and the monitors and cables work fine.

I then checked all my connections on the motherboard (RAM, Power, SATA etc) and even took the 5870 out, put it back in and tried a different PCI-E slot but no change.

I don't get any warning beeps on boot and I've cleaned the gold connections on the card as well (Sapphire 5870 which is at stock). Hadn't switched it on since a week before where i played L4D2 demo with no problems.

I tried one cable only and then alternative cables to the monitors, tried plugging the cables in post boot and during but no joy

Typical that MW2 is about to come out and something goes wrong. The only thing I haven't tried is to reset the CMOS so that might be my next port of call but would appreciate any advice if that fails. The PC is only 3 weeks old from a competitor company (they were as stumped as me when I phoned their support) and I suspect I may have to get a replacement card.

My 5870 did this, worked fine for a week then tried to boot it one day and no screen and the fan was at 100%. It still booted into windows as I could hear that.

I've got a Thermaltake Toughpower 600W which is modular so would probably have some spare 6 pin connectors so will check if the ones connected are at fault. I did unplug the two connectors from the card and tried but boot but got the continuous beeps from the motherboard and when I plugged them back the PC then booted as normal (but with no display).

L0rdMike did you RMA your 5870 or did it just resolve itself? My fan powers up and down as normal though,

cheers

Hi, sounds like you have the good old 'no signal over DVI problem' that has afflicted many (including myself). There many posts on different forums about this, here's one example. In my case I went from an 8800GTX to a 4870 and since then I have never managed to get a DVI signal on my Dell monitor. I replaced the 4870 with a 260 GTX still no DVI. And now 5870 and still no DVI. Try a DVI to VGA adapter and you should be back in business.

I sent mine back, sometimes it would work most times I had a hurricane inside my pc running at 100%.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try the VGA adaptor to see if that works. I'm going to propably RMA the card and in the interim the PC builders are going to give me a replacement card (as 58xx are a few weeks away from being back in stock).

cheers

Ok so some progress; VGA Adaptor didn't work but I tried plugging in my Bedroom TV via HDMI and that now works (although it's a crappy 1360 x 768). So it is the mysterious DVI signal issue. Thanks for all the help and pointers!

cheers

Hi Sckam,

I'm going for a replacement after i've tried uninstalling / installing drivers (to check that it is a hardware fault but have got a DVI-HDMI adaptor today and will see if that works (as I have 2 monitors and only one HDMI port)
