If I'm playing a game and the screen goes dark in game, my monitor switches itself off. I also notice it randomly gets slightly darker from time to time and then gets brighter again. Just there now it went a lot darker than normal and appears to be staying that way, I've unplugged it plugged it back in but it is still dark. There is also a distinctive burning smell that has covered my entire room. Is my monitor on its last legs? If it matters, I have a LG M2762D

The screen is still dull and the smell has only got worse. The monitor is ~26 months old and I have used it probably every day for at least 4 hours. Is it time to buy a new monitor?

Are you sure it's not still under warranty if it's only 26 months old? might be worth sending LG an e-mail/phone call to ask them.

its not some sort of power saving built into the monitor is it? ive got lg led monitor and if nothing is diplayed or moving on monitor it dims down to save power, soon as it detects a moving image it brightens up ect

This sounds like a coincidence, but I also have a 27" LG M2762D that I purchased in May 2010, 20 months ago. Last week it made a strange noise and then gave the same burning smell you describe. The monitor still works, but I unplugged it immediately, and just tried it again today and the smell still happens even after being off for one week. I am assuming that the warranty has expired (is it a one year warranty?) but since the monitor still works, I think it might be worth it to have it repaired, although I don't know how much it will cost.

I noticed someone else had the same monitor and the burning smell but sold it on e-bay for 53 GBP.

The comment was...
"This tv is working and in good looking condition but when turned on from the right hand side circuit board a burning smell has developed."
"I believe that the smell is coming from a burning out diode, if tv was taken to a repair shop or you had knowledge tv could be repaired for a very little cost."

I wonder if he said "very little cost" just so he could get it sold, or if he really knew it was a burned out diode. Anyway, I would like to go to an authorized service center to have it repaired, so I will find out if "very little cost" is true or not.
