Thinking about a Civic Type-R

Rubbish.

Steering wheel doesn't centralise properly yet Honda can't find anything wrong, there's a flat spot at 2000rpm and if you're not accelerating hard it feels like you're stomping on the brakes as the engine drag is massive.

Honda main dealer don't want to know so it may be time to go and test drive a 182.

Not had much luck with yours have you? :(

My slight misfire was valve clearances I think - had a service done and the clearances adjusted a few months ago and it's lovely and smooth now.

The steering problem is surely dodgy steering rack (common fault)? Maybe it's the dealer being an arse... :(

thats not good, when you add the the fuel figures I'm seeing, I think Im back on the celica/182 bandwagon.

Fuel economy should be fine. Depends how you drive it. My Integra returned 34mpg on a treck from Bham to Glasgow and back. Usually people complaining about poor economy are driving it hard and expecting it to run on vapour, or are putting regular UL in it.

Emphasis on "usually" there though...

When I took the car to the dealers to sort out the steering problem I also took along dozens of pages from the Type-R forum of other owners that had exactly the same symptoms yet they still deny that they've ever heard of any problem. (some people have had 3 steering rack replacements!!)

It's going back again on Saturday but I don't hold out much hope as their diagnostics rely on getting one of the mechanics to drive it which gives them the get out clause of "they all do that"

I think a sternly worded letter to Honda UK is in order.

Rubbish service. I'd be fuming & tempted to go a few miles extra to a different dealer. :(

I have an ace up my sleeve. I just found out that a bloke I work with is mates with the manager for the other Honda dealer in Bristol so if I get any more excuses from my local dealer I'll go see him instead.

Shouldn't have to do that though, they should just sort out any problems without any fuss. I went with a main dealer and paid over the odds so that things like this wouldn't happen.

Shocking service. What is it with some dealers? Why do they treat their customers so disgracefully?

heh, dont expect astonsihing fuel economy from a celica driven hard! My tanks pretty big (oo err) and when i thrash it i see the digital fuel bars start to disappear in front of my eyes. No idea what i'm actually getting mpg wise, its very good when driven sensibly - 35mpg they quote i think(?), but as with anything (even diesels) thrash them and they will (obviously) lose mpg. This is on super unleaded (Total, Shell, Sainsburys & BP - basically whichever is nearest).

The Clios are nippy little buggers as they're so light, and will surprise many "fast" cars but (being biased again :p ) the quality of the interior and the vehicles themselves (and spec) pale into insignificance next to a TSport Celica. Ultimately you're driving a Clio - which doesn't inspire the same feeling as driving something *slightly* less common and more exotic.

But hey, i admit i'm biased - i love my Celica, drove it back to back with Imprezas, CTRs, BMW 330s, VX220s etc. Whilst i agree it wasn't the BEST car i test drove in each category (Impreza was amazing but costly to run, 330 just lovely but a bit bland and a 3 series :p, CTR fun but boy racerish) the celica gave me the feeling of meeting all of my criteria perfectly.

Banzai acceleration (feeling of it anyway), lower running costs, high spec level, sporty yet practical styling/design, and not too many of them about (although now i own one i swear i see more of 'em!). they also are 2 cars in one - keep it below 6.5k rpm and you'll have a nippy but fuel friendly commuter, and drive it hard and you'll have a brilliantly handling quick sports coupé.

Anyway i'll stop now, getting a bit too biased methinks :p

I dont expect good fuel economy that is not what I will be buying my next car for, but when Im not thrashing it (I.e in traffic on way to work or actually trying to get somewhere) IE driving not for pleasure. I want to see over 30mpg. A scary ammount of people are not getting this in a CTR, where as th celicas and clios seem to have no trouble managing it. The 2 cars are very different and I will consider them both, but as I dont like the looks of the civic and do like the clio/celica I think it was already decided for me anyway really.

I get about 200 miles from £30 if I'm just doing normal driving (ie not thrashing it)

Somebody else can work out the MPG as I'm just off to do an interview.

Because they can. The CTR is a well liked car that sells itself really. :(

I dont like dealers, they dont care about you car or your business. as soon as mine was out of warrenty it went straight to my mates garage, even if I didnt know him, the smaller garages are more likely to care about you business and word of mouth reputation. There are a lot of cowboys and scammers (like kwick fit! lol) but My dealer experiences with ford and renault(my dads espace) have not been great to say the least. I also did a trial at BMW where I saw an M3 go out without the oil or filter being changed, I got told off when I mentioned it. (suffice to say I didnt take the job). If I did get a clio sport, it wouldent be going to renault!

whats the civic forum address? I had a go in my mates stripped seam welded Civic VTI with an 220bhp 1.8 wedged in it and that thig flew. I want me some Vtec! I think it may be Civic or DC2 for the win.

How any CTR owner gets on without a diff is anyone's guess. Drive an ITR and see the huge difference it makes - you'll be pricing one up in no time.

I'm getting 27/28 combined in my ITR - not great, but its about right. Low 20's if you live in the VTEC.

My major issue with the whole VTEC situation is that its just feasible on todays roads. I live in the city, surrounded by speed camera's and speed bumps, and I rarely get chance to get into the VTEC before I've gotta slow down for traffic/cameras/bumps.
And outside of the VTEC is just boring. You feel like you've got to be "on it" all the time to enjoy it. Its all or nothing. Don't get me wrong, its awesome when you are gunning it, which just adds to the whole frustration.

My Elise, and even my old LupoGTi, provided fun 5/10ths upwards. Fun at sane speeds.

Which is why, even though I dislike French cars, I think I'd side with the Clio182 or the Trophy if possible.

All IMO, of course.

Agree sub vtec it's lame - like a normal 2.0, well, perhaps a bit better but still lame.

Got my vtec dropped to 4350rpm, takes off very nicely even that low down but it still doesn't stop me wanting to 9k it every gear just for the noise and power it makes up there.

Seriously considering a supercharger atm, just trying to get the cost sensible (buy from the US) and do some research with knock on effects, adequacy of internals etc etc etc...

Whilst i'll go back and read the whole thread later, i'll just add my bit.

Ive had numerous problems with my 05 CTR, mainly the interior. The quality of the plastics is horrendous. Mechanically its fantastic, but as for the rest of it? my £100 volvo is built better.

Ive had my 05 CTR for a few months now, and its going because ive had enough of it. I wont be buying another one.

The dealer service is shocking, and the insurance and petrol costs arent as cheap as you might think (petrol certainly not - around 200 miles to a tank)

Apart from the fact its not financially sensible for me to run the CTR anymore, im glad its going. I'll miss the engine, but not the shoddy interior.

/edit

I heard these VTEC adjusters dont work well on the EP3 CTR anyway.

I am probably biased but RX8 imo ;)

Its not lacking power at all - the hi-power version is 230bhp with quoted figures of 0 - 60 in 6.2 seconds (seems about right imo). Its the sexiest looking cars out of any mentioned in this thread (IMO... but its fact :p). Only let down is the fuel economy which you stated is not an issue.

The Type-R is a nice car - but personally I hate Hate HATE the gear stick stuck where it is.

You are spending a decent wad of cash on a car so you want to avoid the common brands/makes (Clio, Corsa, $Ford etc). No point spending good wonga to look like every other Tom Dick and Harry on the roads.

In regards to the Celica I was very VERY tempted with one of the new shape ones when I was looking at buying a car... right up to when I actually sat in one. I am average height (6 ft) but sitting in a Celica was horrible *shudders* you cant see anything, its like dragging your butt on the floor and its not even as low as the Rex.

IMO, M3 or RX8.
