Right, hey there!

Firstly, sorry I haven't posted in the ONE thread, but I had a few other unrelated questions, and its easier to see the answers here.

Okay, well, I really, really like the look of Netbooks, particularly the Aspire One. It is sleek, well priced and looks like it will do everything I want 'on the go' e.g. web browsing, photo storage, word processing etc.

I like the Linux 8GB SSD model, because I don't feel that I need a HDD, and will just buy additional SD cards if I need more space. My first concern about the SSD's is, are the write speeds quite bad? I know they read fast, but in some benchmarks of the system (no idea how reliable they are), the write speeds was about on-par, or worse than the HDD.

Secondly, does anyone know if Acer plan to release any new models or enhance previous ones before Christmas? I was hoping for a 1GB linux model, but it seems that is not possible without upgrading it yourself?

Thirdly - battery power. I will mainly be using this for school, and will probably take on holidays etc as well. My school day is 6 hours, obviously I won't be using it all the time, but I don't feel that the 2.5 hours from the 3 cell is sufficient. I heard that there are 6 cell battery packs available (and have found a few online, albeit around £70+ - I was wondering if there are any models that come with a 6 cell battery as standard, or even bundled?

I have looked on the purple shirt place, the jungle place and the 'play' place with no luck. (Hope that doesn't break rules...)

And finally, will there be any alternatives to the Aspire ONE in the lead up to Christmas? I have looked at the eeePC, but personally, I am not so keen on the design etc.

Your help/replies much appreciated!

There is a 160GB HDD model with 6-cell battery in the wild, over in Canada I believe.....so likely here one day

Yes keypuk is right a 6-cell version will probably be here before xmas. Also, it will probably be 3G enabled out of the box.

About the SSD. There are two different version of the SSD believe it or not. An intel one and a Samsung one. Getting which ever is a lottery, but many people have commented that the intel one is fine for linpus use, but not so good with a install of XP. But if your going XP you may as well get the harddrive version if you ask me.

Like I said, I deffo want to stick with Linux, it is a much more versatile OS for what I want to do, have used it before, and loved it. Only reason I went back to Windows was a lack of support for some apps, games etc - my main things on this PC.

I would rather have a SSD version, and pref with a 6 cell battery too. I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled :p

The aspire one is a brilliant little laptop!

As has been said, 6 cells exist but not in the UK yet. The SSD is rather slow at writing but under Linux this is not a serious issue (I believe). However, I have heard bad reports of XP and Aspire SSD machines.

1GB versions are available (check out the Jungle store) but can't remember if they were just 120GB HDD versions..

I have one of these and its brill and cheap!! The 1gb version is avalible with the 120gb hdd version.

Linux is fine for running on and not had a problem.

Im recieving my 120Gb HD and 1Gb RAM model on saturday and canot wait :D

They look amazing for what they are and I hope they keep up to it :)

If you're used to Windows, Linux is a steep learning curve.

Be prepared for root, terminals and sudo yum..

It all sounds scary, but there are plenty of people to help you out. And it's true - Linux does have software for everything - but the quality can be patchy; be prepared to try, uninstall and try again!

At least there is no "buy, try and buy again" to worry about LOL

I'm thinking of buying a One for University, with it being so portable would be perfect to sit on my lap while I write an essay or on my desk with lots of books etc.

Already been reading reviews the whole day and decided to go for the 1GB, 120 HD with Windows XP Home. Most likely buying it from the land of purple shirts because if anything was to go wrong it would be under warranty and I could just take it back to them to get it sorted.

I start on Monday so I will see if there is really a need for a laptop at uni, since i have my desktop in my room, but from the look and portability of it, I want one :)

OneTime from my last year at uni you'll definately need one, I had a lot of short breaks between lectures (about an hour) and it ain't worth leaving the site so can easily get bits of work done or just browse the net

In that case you wont find a better Netbook!, Take mine more or less everywhere now as its so portable!.

Just wondered over to Tescos (They seem to do everything now). Had a little play on it, was the 1GB, 120GB HD with Linux on it...liked it very much. Took about 5mins to get used to the size of the keyboard (I have large hands). Had a guy come over and he was like, "wow, they get smaller and smaller every day." lol.

If your wanting it for uni and using it throughout the day at uni I would wait until the 6 cell battery version comes out (before xmas).

Ah ok. Well like I said, before spending the money I wanted to make sure there was a real need for me having a laptop, since it is my first year and I have my desktop in my room. So I will be waiting anyways :D

Thats exactly the model I ordered but putting XP on it, hope it lives up to expectations

Cool, hope it does :D
You seen my other thread? The new Samsung netbook "NC10."
Looks very, very nice. Possibly get that over the Aspire One.
