Thinking about an iMac

Hi Guys,

Just looking for some advice really, I've been looking at getting a 27" iMac to do my photo editing on along with some home video stuff and maybe a bootcamp for some windows games - but I'm a bit stuck with the choice of system.

There's a refurbed 27' Quad Core i5 online or I can get a basic spec 27" i3 new one, I think there's about £100 or so in it.

Is there any advantage in buying the newer one over the refurb or anything I should be aware of by going down the refurb route?

Cheers

Kev

The refurbs are generally like new, just in a brown box. They have the warranty that's the main thing.

If I was doing editing I'd go for the Quad.

I just bought one of the refurbed 27" i5 iMacs and I'm really pleased with it. I have bought a few things from the apple refurb store and they have all been in mint condition and you would never be able to tell they weren't new. At just over 1200 squid they are quite good value as a 27" non LED dell monitor would set you back 870 squid so to get a quad core computer for an extra 400 squid is a pretty good deal. The supplied 4850 is more than capable of most things though probably not as good as the newer 5xxx ati cards for gaming however I'm not to bothered about that.

I'm not finding the switch from windows 7 to be problematic as its quite easy to figure most things out just by fiddling with it!

Go for it!

Thanks Dave! The only game I play that I found needs a bit of horsepower for graphics is battlefield2, I think the 4850 should be ok for that.

Well I did it! It arrived today and it's great! The only problem I can find is that there's no wireless apparently present. There's no airport showing up by the clock and no wireless showing up in the network properties - so I'm a bit stumped...

I've connected it via ethernet for the time being and done all the updates too :(

Click the + at the bottom of the Network Properties Box, it should mention an AirPort network device in the first dropdown menu.

If not, click the Apple logo in the top left, click 'About This Mac', then click 'More Info...', this'll open System Profiler.

Under the Contents on the left, there should be an AirPort option under 'Network', check it's reporting there's a card.

If that all fails, there's an issue with your AirPort.

Thanks, just checked - there's no mention of it - only software versions :(

gah.... will try Apple Care - I'd put it into Diag mode, but don't have a USB keyboard until I get into the office tomorrow to borrow one

Apple care have booked me an appointment in the local store tomorrow - they could only otherwise offer me a refund, not a direct replacement :( yes, I'd like to be without £1300 for 10 days and no machine to show for it... before I can order another one and wait for it to show. Hopefully they'll be able to fix it tomorrow

It'll get sorted though which is the main thing! Bit disappointing they let it out with an Airport issue but all will work out!

This is true - still disappointed that they could have missed something this obvious! Is it something that can be fixed in-store do you think, or will they need to send it away?

Is the Wi-Fi adapter showing in system profiler?
Has the interface been disabled in the network preference pane?

Well I took it into Bath today - they're going to replace the Logic Board and the Airport Card - but they don't have the parts in stock until Monday / Tuesday :(

Yes,I tried that with AppleCare, which feels more like don't care at the moment... Had a call from the store and they're still having issues with it, so who knows when I'll get it back :(

Well I've now got it back which is great! however its now hissing and clicking when it plays any sound - doesn't do it with headphones plugged in, so they've introduced a new fault - back on the phone to apple care..

well, they were really helpful... they're going to collect it and give me a refund, but they're not going to help me get another machine, so I have to do that off my own back - amazing.... I expected more from their customer care to be honest.
