I'm thinking about treating my self to an American 8gb iphone from a well known auction site for Xmas.

I was wondering what are the big features that i will miss (i don't use 3g).

Also will it have 1 year world wide warrenty so if it breaks i can flash it to an unhacked firmware and get it fixed in the apple store?

Oh and if i took it to the apple store and they fixed it wouldn't they put on the latest official firmware thus disabling me from using the phone?

Thanks

Edit: Would i be able to buy an 8gb iPhone from O2 on the 9th of november and not pay for a contract?

I'm in the same boat as you, thinking of getting an iPhone, was debating getting a Touch for a while but I now wanna get an iPhone. Major things it's missing:

MMS - Hopefully implemented in a future update, can't see it being a major challenge
Bluetooth file exchange - Possible update but I suspect it'll be limited, you won't be able to send music and videos from the iPhone at least
Custom ringtones - You have to pay to put em on or use a hack
Cut + Paste - Pretty likely this one will appear very soon
SMS to multiple numbers - Same
SMS forwarding - Same Again
Video Recording - Doubt we'll be getting this
Flash - maybe if we're lucky
3G - Nadda, maybe next gen

That's all I can think of! The warranty thing is a bit iffy, I suspect you'd have to do a bit of lying in order to get em to repair it, I haven't heard many complaints about failing iPhones so hopefully it won't be needed! From what I can gather, even if they put a different firmware on you should still be able to unlock it again (altho don't quote me on that). As for your last question i don't have a clue, guess we'll find out on the 9th!

Best way to get your iPhone replaced by Apple UK (if you've got a hacked US one) is..

Flash to the latest firmware, 1.1.1, then do a restore via iTunes.. whilst it's doing it's thing pull the plug.

This will destroy the iPhone beyond repair, and thus they can't determine you hacked it.

From here you just claim ignorance, and say it "just broke".

You may have to show them your purchase receipt.

You're best off ringing O2 about contracts.. you don't have to sign up to one in-store, or even in iTunes.. but you won't be able to use it unless other 02 sims work in it.

Are you sure? How would you do that then? Would save me ~£80 getting one straight from Apple/O2, but I thought it'd be difficult getting an iPhone without signing up to the contract...

Yes, you are under no obligation to sign up to a contract in-store.

If anything, Apple is encouraging people to buy and take it home to sign up on iTunes.

That's how so many people are buying them.. because they just hack them (and don't have to worry about a contract).

Oh cool, I thought you'd have to sign up to the contract at the same time or you'd have to use a workaround (like in the US there's something about putting in an incorrect NI number and so it thinks you've got bad credit and offers you a pay as you go iPhone instead). I was gonna get an unlocked one this weekend but I might wait a couple of weeks and unlock one myself!

Amazing so i can just walk into an O2 store and ask for an iPhone and if they try to force a contract on me i can just say ill get the contract another time?

Probably, we'll see how they handle it here, I'm gonna order direct from Apple just in case they try to get me to sign up there!
It's called Willpower. Just tell them to go whistle.

If they sell the iPhone like they did in the US then you are only buying the phone, the activation and contract is all done through iTunes.
