Thinking about Apple TV unit

Right I already have an apple mini mac (intel edition) and think it is a fantastic bit of kit for the size of it. Now my plan is to remove one of my big PC's and replace it with either:

a) another mini mac

or

b) the new apple TV unit.

Now I am going to use this as a HTPC. My intention is to probably bootcamp xp:MCE or Vista home premium on the unit so that I can continue to use it with my Xbox 360.

The reason why I am doing this is simple. The design and cost of components. I want it to sit under the Tv and given that the mini mac is silent it would be a good edition to the family of PC's I already have.

So not really hearing much about this I was wondering what your thoughts were?

am I right that this is running a version of OS X or is this using something else?

edit: it seems like this is just like an extender device for the PC/ MAC system similar to how the 360 is an MCE extender.

So I think that if I want to install windows on it then I will have to go with a mini mac.

Yep, to do what you want you will need a Mac Mini. I think it's possible that the TV device will be updated or hacked to do more than it's currently specced to, but as it stands it doesn't do much more than stream iTunes to your telly :(

Couldn't you just build your own HTPC for a lot cheaper?

Plus that only give you 40GB and 40gb of HD Video isnt that much. Also it is not upgradable, due to its size (which is a benefit aswell).

mATX case+mobo (or when it comes out DTX), then you are set for your world in the HTPC!

at the moment I am just toying with the idea of doing this. I am more inclined to get rid of the second pc and put vista ultimate on my current rig as it seems to perform well with the beta version that I have on it.

the mini mac wouldn't need a huge amount of space I have plenty of storage on my current rigs and plan to upgrade I already have over 750GB of space available to me.

i think it only works for the original xbox.... but it offers what apple tv does and a hell of a lot more.... i recommend that.. and i am a bit of an apple fan boy!

To be honest I got rid of an xbox as it was never used once I got the 360.

Plus with the likes of programs such as transcode 360 I feel that using this with a MCE based system offered me much more than XBOX MC offered me.

I think I may just upgrade my current machine at some point in the future and use my old components for some form of NAS/web server/ sql based box simply because it may give me the best solution for what I am after.

Still I would like another mini mac and may wait to see if they upgrade the current stock at all. Just out of interest how often do apple upgrade the standard units eg more memory better processors?
