Thinking about making a comeback

As title. Seriously considering making a comeback. I miss the banter and the fun in here.

Having been away for a while, I've no idea what the current optimum clients are so I thought I'd ask for a bit of advice. I'll be running on my gaming rig (which does very little in the way of gaming and, as such, lies idle for long periods).

Spec is:
i7 3770K
3 x GTX670
32GB RAM

You didn't expect me to have a low spec rig now, did you? :p

I've had a quick look around and seen something about high value beta GPU clients which sound like just the ticket.

Any help would be... well.... helpful.

PS: I'm at work and won't be home for a couple of weeks so don't expect anything to happen too soon.

The high value beta GPU client trial thing did come to an end, but a result of that is many of the GPU WUs are recalibrated and better aligned with the CPU WUs for points. Eventually it's hoped that there will be bonus points for faster returns of WUS on GPU, as has been in place with the CPU, but that's not yet in place. While the beta thing was in place my i7 2600K and GTX670 was getting towards 150,000 PPD. Now it's dropped back and was in the 60-65,000 region, until a couple of recent dodgy WUs.

The nvidia based GPUs do fold well, it seems that folding has optimised it's GPU WU's for nvida and unfortunately AMD cards don't do as well. Not quite sure how well you'd do with SLI setups though and three GPUs may create some cooling issues?

F@H has been better on Nvidia GPUs for a long time now - one of the reasons I've always stuck with them.

SLI won't be an issue, I'll just run them separately for Folding and on the odd occasion I want to game, I'll switch off the clients and engage SLI and then reverse the procedure afterwards.
Heat may well be an issue. I won't know until I try it. If it is, I'll take one of the cards out and bung it in the media/file server and make it a dual purpose rig.

I held the number 1 spot on a couple of occasions in my insane days. Not much chance of that happening again but I should still be able to keep up with all but the nutters at the top :D

Me thinks you'll need more than three 670's to get anywhere close to the top three......

Even BA has begun to spark back into action (not too sure for how long though)......

I've just made a minor upgrade too - with the addition of another two 660's which now brings my total to:

3 x GTX 680's
4 x GTX 660's
4 x GTX 570's
1 x GTX 480

Hoping that i should be able to add a 680 (if the RMA comes through) and also hoping to replace the 570's & 480 with some more 660's :D

Mind you - I won't be sticking around forever as my preferred method of keeping the house warm is SETI and as the new Opt Apps have been available since Christmas (if you know where to look) I should imagine it won't be long until I swap back ;)

From what I can see from the sticky, it would appear the simplest way to get running is the 'FAH Tracker'. Does this autodetect your hardware and download the optimum clients for you or are there other clients for higher end hardware?

I'll need to dig up my passkey from somewhere.
Edit: Found it. Can't wait to get home now and get started.

Aye.....

Three 670s & 3770k should be good for about 140k (as you'll probably need to use two cpu cores to run the gpu's)

but all should be good to fight penfold for fourth spot in RAC

i can answer the baba part , hes currently only folding as a test to make sure hes rigs are stable untill he sells them , he said he'll leave them folding for a week while hes away on some training course. if i could get a loan , i would and buy his 4p rig from him.

I'm thinking I might split the 670s up. I was going to re-use my old gaming rig as a media/file server. I was going to run the i7 950 on 2 cores and underclock and undervolt it to run more economically. I have 6 3TB drives and a 128GB SSD to bung in it. I was also going to run it headless to save on power.

What I'm thinking now is to take the middle 670 out of the new rig and bung it in the old one and keep all cores running with a bit of an overclock and run it as a second folding rig and download/unpack/storage/server machine at the same time. This should keep the heat down a bit on the new rig and boost my PPD a bit. Sometime in the future I might add another 670 to the old rig.

**** me, it doesn't take long for the bug to bite again. I haven't even started yet and I'm planning new hardware :o

i emailed every one, then got b0ll0cked for it LOL , as people return others leave, loudbob above returning to seti , derv stopped folding, dekez said somthing about getting a rig going again when back in this country.

Best thing for GPUs is client 7 from Stanford as 6.41 doesn't get the latest cores. Setup is pretty easy compared with using client 6 and -configonly. Client 7 does GPU & CPU but I'm not convinced by its performance with CPUs under Windoze.

I don't even want to *think* about the power consumption! I cringe when I think about my 4 GPUs

Put it this way - my electric bill would probably cover a small mortgage ;)

That's one of the things that stopped me before but I'm in a better place financially now so shouldn't be an issue as long as I don't go mad like I did before.
