edit: uhm, title got a little messed up there, lol

last night my mothers car got broken into, only her ipod and connection were stolen, it was mostly only paperwork she had, unfortunately she wasnt insured and it was fault of her own that she had too much in the boot so it wasnt closed properly and thats how they got in, they left a bit of a mess but as far as we can see only the ipod was stolen.

anyway, we are sure this isnt the first time its happened to us or in the area, car windows have also been smashed without any reason and other stuff has been going on.

so has anyone set up discreet cctv at their home?

how much would we be looking at and how does it work exactly?

thanks for any info :)

Wouldn't it be cheaper and also smarter to not leave stuff in the car? iPod? A Boot can't close due to all the stuff in it? She has no car insurance!? Are you ****ing serious?

Therein lies the answer (got to facepalm this). Plus, a car alarm will probably be cheaper no? At least that way, if she leaves her boot open again, it will let her know?

the iPod has no insurance not the car you idiot, dont make assumptions. Also we dont know why the alarm didn't go off, obviously its not active if the boot is open, she obvioulsy didnt notice it wasnt open at the time until this morning.

It's not just to stop stuff getting stolen, its about finding out who is doing it... christ

chill.

Thread has potential to be epic...

Why would anyone walk away from their car if the boot isnt shut, let alone leave valuables in there?

I think this post covers it..
I think a slap upside the head is due way before installing CCTV

Sorry but your post reads like the car is not insured....

I haven't set up CCTV but I'm sure a basic system could be had very cheaply. If you are on a tight budget then a motion sensitive web camera attached to your PC could do the job, so sub £100 is probably quite do-able.

I had a problem with wing mirrors being kicked off and scratches down the car (plus other neighbours did) where I used to live. I bought a reasonably cheap cctv camera set from Argos... as it was going to be facing the road and not my property I was warned that I wasnt allowed to do this as id be recording people without consent (I dont know how true this is) also if your mum is parked on the roadside and it isnt well lit up no camera will light from across the street, and the quality recorded at night probably wouldnt sit well if you took it to the police. Unless you paid a reasonable amount for a good cctv setup id say you would be wasting your time and money.
Its an awful thing to go through especially if its repeat offenses and your frustrated as to who is doing it. Possibly contact your local police department and ask about community officers patrolling.
Hopefully it will get sorted.

Only if the field of view encompasses private property such as the gardens of other houses.
If the camera only covers your property, public footpaths or public highways you'll be fine.

It is pretty much the same for photographers.

why would I mention car insurance? I didn't say the car was stolen did I? so therefore it only reads the car wasn't insured if you're not smart enough to read the whole thing and realise car insurance has nothing to do with it.

Thanks to those who actually helped, and to those who just came in and wanted to take a dig at the post, im sure your CCTV knowledge is invaluable and I am very upset that I offended you  (not rly)

Also FYI we live in a very quiet estate and the car is parked in a driveway about 2 steps from the front door, which makes you think its less likely for people to make attempts at breaking in

Steve i live in glasgow.

Do you want to install cctv for your own curiosity or for gathering evidence for the police? If it's the latter you need clear warning signs around your property which is likely to get you even more unwanted attention than it would prevent.
Just get her to stop leaving things in the car and to check it's locked.

You should know better than to leave your boot open then.

I work in security management, CCTV and the legislation surrounding it is one of the things I have to deal with daily. Just believe me when I say you don't need it. Just get insurance or put one of them "Beware of dog" sings up.
