Thinking of an upgrade...

I'm getting fed up of my 1950XT getting really hot and not really doing all that much. I'm tempted to give my system an overhaul/upgrade but I'm stuck on what I should get graphics-wise.

I would only have about £120ish for the card as I'll no doubt be grabbing a C2D chip, mobo and a 500GB drive (currently have AM2 stuff) which is currently look at about £270ish.

What's the best card for the money available then?

256MB 8800GT is just over

Yeah, this is what I was thinking, but then I realised I know nothing on which is the better for the money.

Since the first DX10 cards came out I haven't really kept track of cards at all, all I know is that mine is not all that good and that if I go ATI it should be a 3850 and probably 512MB, know nothing on the Nvidia stuff.

the 8800GT is the faster card by a margin, but the extra memory on the 3850 may come in handy

If you want you could save money on a HDD and get a 320gb HDD, and you might then be able to afford a HD3870XT (The OcUK brand is within the price range)

I have 3x320GBs, and they are all nearly full.

The 3870 would be better certainly, but I'm lacking in HDD space and ideally want one big one for some of my stuff as it maxes out my 320s.

Thing is I want to spend as little as possible, but it's almost looking like I'm going to be buying a new system. I don't want to trust C2D and DX10 graphics on my Hiper PSU, and my case has no HDD spaces.

I certainly want to get the mobo, cpu and graphics...which'll mean PSU too really.

You may aswell get something that will last you longer, otherwise you would need to upgrade again in a year or less.

Yeah, been thinking, the other option is to wait a few months till I'm working on my uni placement and then grab a card, as the 1950 isn't dead yet, just not as pretty as I'd like.

Still, are ATI at the £120ish range better than the Nvidia alternatives?

Yes at that price they generally are, Nvidia only better than ATI when you get to the £150 area imo
