Hi all,

I'm flirting with the idea of buying a Mac Mini, I can only afford the entry level one is it worth £400?

My other question is If I wait until the new OS is released will it come with that?

Please offer me any other Mac related advise also, I've been a life long windows/pc user. I have a PC for gaming, I would like a mac however to widen my knowledge a bit - I work in a charity IT department and am looking for my next move. A lot of places use Macs how are they to maintain etc compared to windows?

Thanks

Ian

Yes.

Very easy.

Can't answer the first question myself as I have no experience of the Mini. :)

I actually moved over from Winblows myself earlier in the year, it took about 2 days to adapt to using OS X and I will very likely never buy a Windows PC again. :)

The new OS is already on pre-order and will be released next Friday. That said, in the unlikely event that your new Mac arrives without leopard, as you would have ordered it after 1/10/07 you will eligible for an upgrade at around £6 so don't worry.

To be safe, just wait a week. :)

Definitely, small, fast, nice looking etc, can't go wrong for £400. Also buying it with Leopard will make all that bit more special :)

You will find it runs a lot smoother, less buggy etc than an equivalent Windows system.

Thanks for the advise, I'm going to wait until next week after pay day and buy one, I'll update with pics and first impressions when its delivered

I had another question just pop into my head -

I have a home network and a file/print server running Windows 2003 R2. I read that getting Macs and Pc's to talk to each other is easy however in practice is this true?

Ian

I've ordered my mac mini, I stretched to the £499 one, I think it is better value for money for the super drive, larger hard disk and slightly faster processor.

It should see me out for a good 3 - 4 years i imagine because apple look after the installed user base (or so it seems)

I'll post pics of my setup when i get it and get a kvm going

Ian

I think expecting 3 to 4 years out of it is a bit much, yes it will still be working in 4 years time but it's going to give you an experience equivalent to using a 4 year old PC now - you'll be waiting around for things to happen.

Be very careful with a KVM, Macs only have USB now, and the Belkin USB KVMs convert into PS2 to do all the processing, so don't work well with a Mac. Get an Avocent KVM though and you'll be fine.
