Thinking of Buying a Nikon D5100

the 550d is £427 iirc this weekend.

I went into the store myself yesterday

The 5100D is certainly more bulky but has the movable screen

The 550D feels a lot lighter

Definitely going with a D5100 from jessops, I'm just struggling with lenses, I have a limited budget and want to be able to take nice portrait shots in low light, landscape / scenery shots and would also like some reach all from 1 or 2 lenses!!!

The best way you can do this is to get the 18-55 with the camera then buy the 35mm F1.8 & 55-200mm VR. IMHO

Both those lenses should be around £265 ish. Little less if you go for 2nd hand.

Would it be worth getting the 18-55 with the camera or should I just get the body and those 2 other lenses, is there anything I can't achieve between the 2 lenses that the 18-55 can do?

Sorry for the stupid questions!

No need to apologise fella, I was in your situation only 6 months ago. I personally feel I need all 3 lenses to cover everything I need to shoot.

The 35mm is too close if you go to an event like top gear live at the nec and try take wide angle shots of cars in close quarters. I tried it a few weeks ago but had to concede and switch to my 18-55 to get the shots I wanted.

I would love an 18-200 but they are far more expensive than the 2 separate lenses.

Thanks :)

What do you think to this deal on the rain forest site "Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm VR and 55-200mm VR Double Lens Kit (16.2MP) 3 inch LCD - £562.90" with £55 cash back it's just a shade over £500?

Jessops don't do this deal and from what I can see it's the cheapest deal for this package.

I would have to buy the 35mm after Christmas when I have a bit more cash! but would the included 18-55 get me through Christmas with indoor family shots etc. ?

Thanks :)

This is a real tricky one, I have just done a quick search and found that you could get all that for around £482 (Jessops body only plus cashback then the Rainforest). Although that is a non VR 18-55. There maybe even better deals than that. I just haven't got time right now to search. Have a good google around. Hotdeals UK is a good site to look at.

The tricky part is I really think to get those great indoor shots for Christmas I think you should really consider stretching to an SB-400 Flash. So you can bounce the flash off the ceiling. You may grow out of it quite quickly and move onto something like the SB-700 but the 400 is still in my bag of tricks, its small and very light on the camera and does come in very handy if you don't want the quite large SB-700 on top.

If all that together is just too much right now I would suggest getting the body + 18-55 + SB-400 first then look for the 35mm + 55-200 in the new year.

Take a look here for some really good advice and shows you the difference when you bounce the flash. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/sb400.htm

That was quite an interesting read thanks, gonna add an SB-400 to my list as well!

Is the 18-105mm lens a good all rounder? Thinking if I could only afford 1 decent lens it might be worth the little extra over the 18-55 but will it perform as well with indoor shots as the 18-55?

Seem to be going round in circles lol

I really can't comment on the 18-105 as I don't own one. My suggestion is use the other areas of that site I sent you a link to. It should help you decide on your lenses.

It all depends on your initial budget!

The 18-105 is a great all round lens, better than the 18-55, just buy that one for now and be done with until you need other lenses lol.

From what I have read the 18-105 is a better lens than the 18-55 and you can now get it as a kit lens with the d5100 at jessops

Consider the bundle over at the JL place, £649.95 with kit lens, 55mm-200mm VR lens, 35mm prime lens and a free Nikon bag. Then you get £110 cashback bringing it to around £540. That's a very good deal.

Ok guys I've made my decision :)

I've reserved and going to collect the following tomorrow from Jessops:-

Nikon D5100 Digital SLR with 18-105mm VR Lens
Lowepro Nova 160 AW (Black)
Total: £558.29

Once I've got my £55 cashback it will be a shade over £500!

Decided to go with this deal as I was really impressed with some of the sample photo's using the 18-105 lens and the lens itself gets some very positive reviews.

I'm also going to try and scrape enough together and get an SB-400 Flash before Christmas, definitely going to get a 35mm but don't know if I'll be able to afford that for a couple of months!

After tons of research I'm going to wait until I can afford a good fast zoom like the 70-300 VR hopefully at second hand or bargain bin price! Will try and get this before my trip to Turkey in July (fingers crossed for a good works bonus!)

Anyway I'd like to thank everyone one for there help, cheers guys :)

I'll bore everyone with some shots when I'm all set up :D

Hey,

I will start my own thread if needbe but as you guys are on the subject just a quick question. I am thinking of getting the D5200 in the new few weeks. I will mainly be using it for normal holiday shots, family and days out. I visit a lot of theme parks and want a camera that I can easily get action shots of roller coasters and photograph peoples expressions. The 5200 looks a decent camera and the video mode seems better than the 5100. I will be using the video mode from time to time. Any thoughts? I am new to DSLR's and this will be my first.

After days on endless research, I've only just gone and purchased the D5100. Incredible price of £429.95 for kit lens and 55mm - 200mm VR Lens. Then a further £90 cashback making it £339.95 for the kit. Stonking price! Now I can add the 35 prime as well all for less than £500.

Where did you get that from? OOooo can feel itchy fingers ready to extend my bank loan.....
