thinking of buying this intel X25-V Value 40gb ssd and a copy of win7 currently i have a samsung f3 500gb and it has all of my data on including OS (vista ultimate 64bit) and games on steam, is there a way of tranfering the data over without having to reinstall drivers games etc..?

thanks :)

With a 40gb ssd you are not exactly going to be storing much data. I certainly doubt it would be sensible to put you steam folder on it.

Your ssd should hold your os. To do this you will need to do a clean install. You will need to re- install most games as well to make windows recognise them properly.

After the os I would put on the ssd any basic apps you use regularly e.g Ms office. You may find you have space for a few games after that.

With 40GB, you will get your OS, and maybe a few apps onto it. Windows 7 alone needs 16GB for 32-bit and 20GB for 64-bit installation.

Definitely not a Steam folder if you intend on having lots of games installed at once.

Even with just Office, Photoshop CS4 and a few smaller apps installed my hard drive has 49.6GB on it. You can't forget about your User Data folder which can get pretty big, and that isn't very easy to move, and also isn't recommended to be moved.

If it was me, I wouldn't bother with a 40GB SSD, as you can hardly get anything on it. You will need to be careful with what you install as to not go over :)

Serious? You running a 20 GB pagefile or something? Just joking with you. Surprised that CS4 uses so much space though. Using an X25-V right now on my laptop at work. Got a fair amount of apps on including full install of Office 07 Enterprise, and sitting at about 16 GB used (Win 7 32-bit).

To the OP, why not throw in a cheap 500 GB Sammy F3 or the like for games and have them on a separate drive?

You can do that, why not, but, the thing is, once you use an SSD, you will then be wanting to run all stuff from SSD. Games maps load way bit faster when using SSD. Simply put, once you're done installing all your apps, you will start feeling sorry why you bought a smaller SSD (Like I did when I bought a 30G Vertex). Better buy a bigger SSD you can afford now. A bigger SSD has it's advantages over a smaller sized one.

40Gb is more than enough, I have just sold my 256Gb C300 and am using my old 40Gb kingston (rebadged intel) as i didnt find any difference unless i benched them.

Now i have just reinstalled Windows 7 x64 Premium on the Kingston and have managed to get the install size down to just over 9Gb with all the updates and a few programs installed, ie firefox etc etc..

So i have more than enough room left over for a few games, 29Gb to be precise :D

I would get at lest a 64gb one, the vertex 2e is going for about 115 inc vat and del at ****** with the dicount code shown. Also the C300 64gb is about 108 after quick cashback from crucial. I got the C300 and its amasing with my asus u3s6 card.

Steam is really flexible with game files. It's all in the common apps folder and you don't need to reinstall them when replacing your OS - just re-install steam into the same directory as the current game files.

My intention in to buy an SSD and only put the games I'm currently playing into the steam folder on the SSD. The rest will sit in storage on my 500GB HDD. I'll just copy them over when I want to play them.

64GB minimum - those Steam folders just keep getting bigger :)

I use Kingston SSD+ 120GB myself - Windows 7, Steam folder (minimum of TF2, CSS, L4D1 & 2 and a few others) and a few apps - still got half the disk free.

I'm waiting for the new ssds. I don't want anything less than 160 want all apps and most games on it

And some more space for whatever

I personally don't want to have to pick and choose what goes where

My 64 Gb is 36.4 Gb full with just windows and drivers, and a few other things.

So you can probably manage with a 40 Gb, though I wouldnt go for any less than 64 Gb.

I put all my games and steam folder on a pair of Raid 0 F3s :)
