Thinking of doing the un-thinkable

Well, the previous owner of my 1098S Duke traded it in for a Multistrada 1200S...

'IDIOT' I hear you say? Yep, I cried that too.

However, as some of you know, I am a fairly capable rider and a mad man. But, after the recent weather, the 1098S feels a bit... Pointless. The only time that bike shines is when it's bone dry and the road surface is good. Which, when it does happen (such as 'the road' (mother of god...)). The 1098S becomes a god and simply blows my mind.

But riding through towns, social riding, anything below me pushing the bikes limits and my own limits (mine before the bike!) simply ruins the bike for me. It really isn't designed to pop out for 20 mins on to go grab a packet of smokes. Nevermind have a pillion on the back.

SO, I am thinking of doing the un-thinkable, doing as the previous owner did and exchanging the 1098S in for a 1200S Multi...

Thoughts? :D

Don't.

Those few moments of pleasure are worth waiting for. It's only April, it's expected to be wet, although not as wet as it has been. Wait till the summer, and smash some good rides out, then see if you think the same :p.

No, you aren't daft agnes, I have been considering something similar. Chopping in the RSV for a Multistrada, albeit an earlier model one. I've also had a hankering lately for going back to a bike I had years ago - a BMW K100RS 16v. All with a view to using either of them for everyday transport to and from work. The RSV is complete overkill for bimbling back and forth to work and I know you only go as fast as your right wrist allows but the temptation is there every time I ride it to cane the thing. But by the same token the Multistrada and even though its ancient, the K100RS aren't slouches by any manner of means so perhaps that argument is a moot point. If I went the K100 route I'd flog the RSV ( it's also got about £1000 worth of extras and tuning parts on it which I'd remove, put the bike back to standard and sell the goodies off ). I'd then buy a leggy K100 for buttons and bank the rest. Or I could go the Ducati way and go for a trade in. Both bikes I think would encourage a slightly more sedate riding pace IMO.

All that said, I just know I'd regret parting with the Aprilia.

Apologies for the thread hijack btw. ;)

Get a Hypermotard tbh if you must swap the 1098 :P

I often feel that my big ol'10r is wasted 95% of the time, but that 5% of the time makes it ALL worthwhile :)

Don't do it Chris.
You only got the bike just before Xmas ? You really havn't had enough time on it yet to really find what a good all rounder the 1098s is.
Once you have the suspension set up for you, it becomes a completely different animal.
You already have the engine mapped properly, so once the suspension is sorted, low speed town riding will be much more enjoyable.
Yes, they do tend to like good road surfaces, but my mates Fireblade feels much the same on bad roads as my 1098s. You could try a set of "Sportsmarts" on her instead of Pirelli's, they smooth out the bumps and road ripples much better and grip is good as well.

Erm a difficult one mate, don’t limit your self to the multi, if its all year riding you want there’s other options, if you want to tour as well.

I love the Multi and it will be between that and the new explorer when i upgrade next year.

I intend to get a track bike in the winter, so i will have the best of both worlds next year but dont want to spend to much.

I wanted to edit my post to say, your bike got most of the attention at the bike meet and is quite special the muti will just be another bike turning up which looks ok but nothing special.

I've got an R1 and a Fazer 1000 which are virtually the same idea as Multi/1098s. I work away so hardly ride the R1 as its usually ****e weather when I get back - I'm not particulary arsed what the bike looks like as long as I have a laugh on it and I know that when I jump on the Fazer it will do everything the R1 does on the road without me worrying about it sliding around in the rain, having to be delicate on the throttle etc.
Yes the R1 is great when its nice and dry, but if I could only have one I'd have the Fazer.

Keep the 1098!

Get an 80's big lump to tinker and commute or do mini social calls. Something like an old cb1 or z1000 or for power and noise and fun get a bandit 1200 and boost it to 140bhp (lad at work is doing this):D

Do this tbh, i had a mk1 Bandit 12 back in the late nineties, they are so simple to tune it's unreal, end can, air box, filter, bit of jetting work & stick an ignition advancer on, give it 2 degrees advance & your talking major grin factor, they can be had silly cheap these days.

This ^. Your bike is special mate keep it & buy a Rat bike as well. Up to 2k you can get Loads for your money.

Going for a 'quick' blast in a second, let's see what she can soon a road I know very well :)

Dry roads and sun, yay yay!

Also, test ride for a multi next week haha

Well, my mind is made up, it's a superb bike (1098 S), but only on the perfect day on perfect roads. I enjoy riding, done my time with superbikes. It's time to try something different.

I enjoy just getting on a bike and going somewhere, done with getting to my personal limits. And with the 1098 S, I will either die or lose my licence trying to push my self any further.

So, going to make a few phone calls tomorrow, see if it's going to be possible to do a straight swap for a multi :)

Get a 600, you have to ring its neck to get the same kind of performance and is far more fun.

Otherwise get a SuperDuke and enjoy the wheelies and madness.
