Thinking of getting a DSLR - Help please!!

The only other thing to do is to look at what lenses you want to buy in the future. unfortunately if you don't know much about photography then this is not easy or practical.

What's your main issue? Trust?
I think I understand where you're coming from. But sometimes you need to make a leap of faith....

Im not leaping with £350

fella, i've had no email from you!

Ha, ok :) Well i emailed you, your hotmail account and we all know how amazing microsoft are :)

Please can you email me or respond to msn, ive messaged you :)

If it goes on ebay it'll start at £250. The stupidity of some ebay-ers means the end price could rival the new cost. Besides, the same payment method would apply anyway, so can't see any gain from the idea.

Agree totally. I can't compete with that, a buyers market.
No need to say, I know already who! Hopefully they've only a job lot. Damn them and their buying power!

I own an Olympus and I must say I'm quite happy with it.

My biggest gripe is the lack of lenses and well the cost of them if you find some.

I'd reccomend Nikon or Canon purely for the fact that they have a massive lense selection.

You'll be using the lenses long after you're upgraded the body.

You said it, you've limited yourself.... ;) :)

Apart from 300mm+ prime super telephoto lenses, there is nothing missing from the Pentax lens line up that an amateur could possibly really and honestly need, although I'll agree the range is somewhat limiting with a Sony & Olympus badge on it. There are more Pentax lenses coming too, even before you take into account the third party lens makers.

Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Tamron & Sigma etc all make great lenses in some shape or form, although the first two in particular will charge you handsomely for the truly great ones...

But, with the budget you've got, only one of those makes the best entry level camera body.

Can you guess which one? :D

Do you see yourself really and honestly finding hundreds if not thousands of pounds to spend on decent lenses in the next few years? If not, then what's the point in locking yourself into a system because of lenses you're never likely to buy?

If you are, then fair enough, go for one of the big two as you've already discovered there is a huge range of stuff available, but remember it's not all good just because it has a Nikon or Canon badge on it, and budget to upgrade the body as well at some point.

Buy for the here and now is my advice, make sure it will do what you want to do with a camera, get the best kit you can for your cash, and don't worry too much about down the line. You'll develop your skills over time, and also realise what type of pictures you enjoy taking the most, which will probably drive you to want/need different kit to what you start off with (well, it did with me anyway!) IMHO, the best entry level kit for your budget at the moment has a name on it beginning with P...

My first DSLR was a Pentax K100d after 15 years of Pentax film cameras and digital compacts. I look at pictures I took with that K100d and compare them to ones produced by my current D90 & D300, and you know what, they aren't all THAT different... Lets not even compare the images taken by my K10d and K20d, where I'd argue the latter even bests the D300 at certain types of image, so don't think there is no upgrade path either. Maybe I'm not getting the best out of my D90 & D300, but then maybe it's about the law of diminishing returns?

I find the more I get out and photograph things, the more good pictures I get, whatever the camera. Funny isn't it?!

So yeah, I'm a bit of a Pentax fan, but that's because they are very good cameras. I like Nikon gear too, and Canon whilst I'm at it, but maybe I just love cameras and taking pictures??!

I didn't mean all that to be patronising, so apologies in advance if it came across like that, it was meant to be helpful! Anyway, that was all very nice to get off my chest, and enjoy whatever it is you end up buying, and I look forward to seeing your efforts on here! :)

I have a strong feeling of Déja Vu.

Have you been in a shop and had a good play around with all the contenders in your budget?

At the pricepoint you are looking towards, there will be very little to choose between the bodies you are considering which should, if common sense prevails, leave the decision down to which feels the comfiest in your hands combined with the interface.

It almost seems as though you could have afforded it earlier but you are struggling to convince yourself to part with the cash.
