Thinking of getting a quad for the summer (road legal)

I'd love a quad. I often see my uncle (farmer) bombing around amongst the livestock on his Big Red :D and it looks loadsa fun (well I've had a bit of a go when I was younger and it was as fun as it looks). But yes I think you'd look a tit on the road.

I've never understood the motorbike thing but I went karting on Saturday and it was such an adrenaline rush, nothing like driving a car (my car at least) so if biking compares in any way, shape or form I can understand. Expensive hobby mind. I think I'd better wait til I'm 30 and had some success on the stock market.

Town quads are hugely chavvy which is why they are, as previously identified, normally driven by fat blokes in stained white t-shirts. It just seems so utterly pointless for the road.

Off road? Totally different kettle of fish. But a road legal one? Why bother..

well come on guys each to there own, i have a car and a vintage moped, so quite fancy a quad, will do a bit of off road and weekend use on the roads if need be.

Get one of the road legal buggies then. At least they have a full cage and the ability to go around corners without falling over. I see quite a few of these in around Torbay in the summer.

Stereo typing ftl guys. I have a Road legal Quad bike and use it every day. They are fun once you get to grips with them. I have not 'tipped over' on any corners and can quite happily keep with the flow of traffic, around corners as well. Unfortunately ****** and chavs seem to ride them (apparently!) as well but they are becoming more and more popular and people are accepting them more as part of the 'Traffic' They are economical as well, I get approx 160 miles to £10.00 worth of fuel. They are not bad on insurance as well, mine cost me £250.00 fully comp.

They do have their uses and not just on the farm:

Some of you need to get your facts a little better before jumping on the band wagon and slating Quad Riders.
If you can get one mate, I would do it. Just make sure you wear the right gear such as helmet and gloves.

That's all well and good, but nothing there disproves the fact that you'd look like a complete waster on one.

What does it do that a motorbike doesn't do better and cooler?

Stability on rough terrain or poor weather conditions, they are available in 4 wheel drive. They carry more equipment, you can ride one on a car license. More visible on the road than a bike. More fun (Though I agree in a different way to a bike) plus if you get a puncture you can still ride it home ;)

whats cool about being dressed up like a power ranger ?

at least with a quad, you can ride round in nothing but a t shirt and no helment and have no regard for the rules of the road and drive however you like.

Isnt that much cooler

please note, the above is why road legal quads are socially wrong. Because they are nearly always driven by the type of muppet driver mentioned above.

You got lots of that in your local city centre have you?

All non issues really.

Road Quads - for the discerning traveller ;)

Has nothing to do with looking like an idiot on one ON THE ROAD does it?

they are available in 4 wheel drive
Which on a flat road will just make them even harder to steer in tight corners.

You can do both of these WITH A CAR, without looking like a moron.

More visible on the road than a bike
But less fun than a bike, and less visible than a car, whilst being almost as dangerous as the bike.

if you get a puncture you can still ride it home ;)
Sounds wonderfully intelligent.

Thanks for the info. I only really looked at prices and things - never driven one. Theres one usually parked by my office.

I thought about getting one because my commute is very short, my daughters school is on the way so I can drop her off easily enough and just roll on down to work. If I take my pushbike I have to walk her to school which is no big deal (well, she sits on the saddle and I walk her)

For what I'm using it for I don't believe its anymore dangerous than any other means for transport. I'm amazed there hasn't been any horrified comment by my suggestion I'd use it to take my daughter to school.

I've never been one to worry unduly about safety ratings when purchasing a car, but personally I wouldn't even consider risking my daughters life on the a back of a quad in traffic.
