thinking of getting a x2 cpu

I took the plunge for a 4600 X2 cpu I've never looked back. Some games developers are now taking advantage of dual core games such as Quake 4 and Half Life 2: Episode 1 support dual cores.

I found that the improvements to frame rates are small but it does help keeping them more consistent. Also if you want to avoid that tedious yet essential task of virus scanning you can do this whilst playing a game so you don't have to wait ages.

Might be worth a memory upgrade, if you start doing twice as many tasks you'll need twice as much memory.

I like it and i think it works well.

cheers for the input, i cant wait till it arrives which i expect will be tuesday.
If a 3700 sandeigo runs at 2.4 whats a 4800 running at 2.9

I dont think a memory upgrade is needed as 2gb is enough for a good long time.

I agree with games starting to use dualcore and patches coming out for dual core support, im just crossing my fingers for an oblivion patch :)

4800+, each cores runs at 2.4GHz with 1Mb L2 cache. 2GB of memory is enough for normal use and todays games unless you really need it. Dual core is really the only upgrade path to be future proof :)

If you just do normal light windows work you won't be impressed with it. However if you're like me, with multiple heavy workloads doing at once, dual core is noticeable. Before you rip out the single core do the following

Spybot scan
Anti-virus scan
Compress large amount of files
Compress a DVD

Then do the same on the dual core when it arrives.

wouldnt the hdd be the bottleneck with those ?

Not if you have several (one per app) Virus scan will scan all, but not both at the same time so shouldn't effect it too much.

HD 0 - Compressing files
HD 1 - Compressing DVD

well it arrived today ive only just ran 3dmark05 and it gave an extra 1200 points so im getting about 11400 which is nice ill try out some games later :)

I went from a Clawhammer FX55 to a X2 4600. System is certainly cooler and there was no drop in performance plus i can game with other programs on in the background if i'm jumping in and out checking emails in outlook. The new 1900XT also helped out there. My FX and 7800GT may end up in MM if my mate doesn't want them.
