As the Subject says,

Fancy a E8500, want the best Motherboard and Mem to overclock it.

It will be an 8800 Ultra plugging in it.

I Have a 3d Galaxy Gigabyte WC kit for the CPU.

Thanks in Advance for your help.....

what is the best mem i should use, i forgot to say i would like to use a motherboard for further upgrading maybe to Q if and when the games became able.

so my Question remains Memory, sorry i'sed to be good at this a few yrs ago, but i tend to get the best i can buy, then wait until i have the need then upgrade.

so, Memory and M/board. ddr2/ddr3 thinking i'll upgrade cpu later.
so thinking ddr3, i wont be buying the new stuff unless there cheap, and we all know the answers to that.

Stick with DDR2 as for the best I'd say the rampage with this Dominator kit, But if your looking for the best ram overclocking wise buy i'd go with Patriot, Cellshock, TeamGroup or Mushkin ram :)

sorry , when I said cheap i meant the new stuff in Q4.

Money isn't an Issue really, I want the best M/board and Mem.

to Match an E8500, with thoughts of paying for a Q when they need is there once the games are writen to make the best of it.

Your Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Save your money and get a E8400. The E8500 is not worth the premium for an extra 0.16Ghz/.5 multiplier. I had one and while it did clock to 4.5Ghz it would'nt pass prime for more than 2.5 hours and needed a lot of volts (which degraded it) to do it. E8400's will hit 4Ghz and more with a decent board.

The DFI boards would be top of my list, closely followed by the X48 Rampage Formula.

The Gskill pc2-8000 and pc2-8500 kits are excellent.

dont bother with the E8500, its just a very expensive E8400 and the motherboard you get may not support the E8500's 9.5x multiplier leaving you with in effect a E8400. Id get a E8400 and over clock it.

Good thread this one, and I made my own purchasing decision based on it too

Went for the EVGA 780i and Core 2 E8400, Corsair 2gb dominator ram.

Gonna hook this up with a pair of 9600GTs :)

Let me know how you get on with your rig mate;)

hi try a 8500 and a formula extreme i have just tested a 1 for a customer the 8500 is running at 550x9 at 1.375v on single stage with corsair ddr3 1600@1750 the system is like a rock with plenty more to give

the Multiplier is at 9x making it effectively a E8400.the multiplier for the E8500 should be 9.5x

Yeah but because he's got the thing running at 550, its effectively running
at 4950, does it not, which is utitlising all of the memory's bandwidth too.

Tell me if i've got it wrong

Got the components today, been priming the thing undervoted to 1.012 volts @ 3ghz for the last 8hours. Going to let it go 24 hrs then start pushing it.

So far it the cpu is running 100% @ 41 degrees (arctic freezer hsf).

thanks so far<
if you dont mind, let me know the hard ware...it helps every body

i dont want this to turn into a QvE or a 2V3
mem thing.

all are welcome.

tell me more how you achieved the magic 5 with E8500,

or how close you got with E8400

thanks this is a good thread

I wont be going for 5, I'm going to stick with air so I think that's out of the question.

I got impatient a while ago and started playing with the FSB, got it up to 4ghz pretty easy on 1.35v ~ 62 degrees full load (core temp). I think with a bit of patience and some ventilation adjustments on my case I think 4.5 might be doable on air (temps drop 6 degrees by just taking the side panel off, so I think if I add a panel fan that should be good enough)

The exact hardware is as follows (straight from OC despatch mail :))

£5.99 x 1 - Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g)
£14.99 x 1 - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775)
£114.99 x 1 - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail
£154.99 x 1 - EVGA nForce 780i SLI nForce 780i (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (132-CK-NF78-A1)
£44.99 x 1 - Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x1GB)

I've added a pair of 9600GTs and a X-FI xtreme gamer.

I didn't apply the Arctic Silver, just using the TIM that came on the Freezer.

my hat is off to you mate, great post :)

that is exactly what i was looking for.:D

look at how little you've spent, that thing will be a rocket ship,

any more takers???
