Thinking of getting an SSD drive but not sure what size

I am currently looking too add my first SSD drive too my system but dont know too go for a 60gig version or a 120gig version. It all comes down too a matter of price really I can get a 60 gig version right now but will have too save a bit too purchase a 120gig. I tend too use the system for gaming and have 2tb worth of hdd's.
 
ive got a 80gb which when in windows is 74gb so you loose some right away ive about 3 games on and only 20gb left....i reckon i should have got a 128 gb one and id have a few more gb left for about 5 more games.
 
In terms of cost/benefit, you'll see the biggest improvement from using an SSD for your OS drive.

What are your current hdds? If they're reasonably fast (F3, F4) stick them in raid0 for a games drive. It won't give you SSD performance, but it'll still be pretty fast. Even 128gb is going to be tight if you're thinking about sticking OS, apps and games on there...

Save for a bit and buy a 128GB C400 when they get released ;)

Read = 415mb/s ;)
Write = 175mb/s

Price isn’t the only benefit of the C400, performance should be much improved as well. Micron is claiming sequential read speeds of 415MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 260MB/s (256/512GB drives). The 128GB drive is good for up to 175MB/s sequential writes. Random write performance is unknown at this point but I heard Micron mention something around 50,000 4KB random write IOPS.

I went for a 128GB C300 when I just bought mine, because when I checked the size of my C: drive, even with only a handful of games and apps installed, I had used over 100GB in total. Admittedly, a good chunk of that was in the Users folder, but still, I definitely felt I wouldn't be able to get away with anything less than 128GB if I wanted to stick the OS and my most frequently used games and apps on there.
 
If you go for a ~60Gb drive, then you should have plenty of room for your OS and applications, with perhaps room for one or two games. If you're intending to have a decent number of games on the SSD (e.g. make it your steam drive) then you'll really want the 120Gb size.

Personally I like having games on the SSD - load times are great.
 
I will soon be after a 128Gb drive been coping with a 30GB one for a while now, its annoying constanly running out of space.

Is the C400 the best one to wait for?
 
Only my personal opinion... but 120GB as a min would be my recommendation. I know you "can" manage with smaller, but as already stated.... you soon run out of room and it is annoying having to keep that close an eye on space.
 
I think the worst thing would be to reach a point where you are continually forced to uninstall an old game whenever something new came out. Personally I'd be happier knowing I have more than enough, and waiting a little while to get the money to do so
 
I would aim for 120+ but 60 as a bare minimum, like i have you can manage with 30 but its annoying constanly running out of space, its not even enough for windows plus my mains applications, never mind games.
 
60gb for os and apps is the way forward, until you are getting 300gb ssds for 100 it just isnt worth getting more imo, this is coming of having a separate ssd for gaming and then selling it because the number one place you notice it is os and apps. Games I just didnt.

Bear in mind also one once you take the os and apps off your hdd, it will go faster as it can focus on just loading your games and data and not have to spend time multitasking.
 
I have a 60GB Corsair SSD and I only have The Witcher and Starcraft 2 installed along with Windows 7 and I only have like 15GB free (so like 1 more game and the hard drive will be full). So I think the minimum should be 80GB. Hopefully prices will come down now the 3rd generation disks are being released soon.
