Thinking of getting an Xbox - should i? Costs of entire system

You don't need the wireless adapter, I use a wireless access point which cost peanuts.

Best bet is to connect it to the laptop via ethernet (crossover cable!) and use the laptop as a gateway.

Both systems are awesome. I've got an xbox but am tempted to buy a ps3 in a few months. So much gadgetry to buy, so many weeks between pay cheques :p

Would I have to install a new operating system, or would Xbox 360 standard operating system be set up for this?

Is tversity an add on?
Will Tversity allow me to stream anything/view any webpage?

OS: You get NXE like everyone else, you are thinking of xboxmediacentre which does not work on 360s.

Streaming: Tversity is a streaming application that streams video audio content stored on your PC (on your network). It can also stream Youtube links (I have learnt, in this thread :) ). It is not a web browser, although if it streams youtube it probably supports other video sharing sites (if that is what you are after). Assume for now you can stream any music and video content (as a general rule).

Music: the 360 lets you rip tracks to the HDD. i.e. Insert your standard AUDIO CD and it will rip the files using WMA (I think) to the 360's HDD. There is no way to physically copy existing files from your PC to the 360 (is that what you are asking for?). Only way is to leave a PC on your network on and stream through Windows Media Player or Tversity (there is otehr apps as well).

Wifi: You can use a wireless bridge, or bridge the connection with a LAN cable going into your laptop. The 360 adaptor is by far the easiest and most convenient solution, but costs most :) The other options are cheaper, but will require a bit more configuration (or just post here and ask when you get the kit). Cheapest way is a long LAN cable :) (see a few posts up).

Probably get shot for this, but PS3 covers you needs better tbh. You can install Linux if you actually wanted another OS. Internet access is available as there is a browser on the PS3, tversity will only stream video/music media. You can copy all your music onto the harddrive via mem sticks, ext. harddrives etc. Instead of only being able to rip CDs. PS3 has built in wireless aswell.

a crossover cable should be used if you're linking two machines directly (ie xbox to pc/laptop)

a patch cable is used if you have a network switch or router/modem router with a built in switch and you are connecting your xbox and laptop/pc to that.

take my set up for example. i have a wireless modem/router/ (most decent ones do all three jobs) which is connected to my phone line. i use the wireless for my laptop and as my xbox sits next to it i use a short patch cable to connect the xbox to the router and access live.

You could use a crossover, if you chose.

Simple Answer: None

If your cable is going to be going from 360 to a router/switch, None. The 360 is auto sensing so can be used with either cable, regardless of what is on the other end.

I'll be putting mine on the MM for around 160quid.

That includes wireless headest, 20gb HDD and games.

Console is only 2 months old, coming up to the start of the 3rd.

Bought just before Xmas.

PS3 is the better media platform yeah (especially connectivity wise, but not sure if 40/80's have card readers) but the internet browser is rather 'meh' and Linux is probably pants on it, guessing he already has a PC too so I'm thinking he only asked about the OS because he thought media streaming wasn't a standard feature of the 360.
 
Another option is to copy all your photos, music and videos onto a cheap external HD, then connect it to a USB port on the XBox and play Videos, music and photos off that(saves having your PC on and you wont have to spend allday ripping CDs to the XBox HD). Its also bloomin easy to do.

I do a similar thing, currently use a 4GB usb pen drive as a juke box for my 360.
 
What about connecting directly from the router to the xbox via ethernet cable?

Do i need to pay for some attachment to do that as well?

I shall look into streaming off my music collection and TVersity.

I have a 360 for years, there really good but the PS3 beats it sadly because it has blu-ray support and free online gaming and better dashboard, Internet viewing etc.!

There is an ethernet port on it already so you can just use an existing ethernet cable to connect it. (You will get an ethernet cable with your new 360 anyway).
