Thinking of getting some Beyerdynamic DT150 headphones

After using my £13 Sennheiser headphones for the past 3-4 years and moving into a flat in the next few weeks I've decided it's time to get some decent headphones.

I've read a lot of good reviews on the DT150s and they seem to be a really good price as well.

Currently I just use the headphone ports on the front of my PC case, so basically on-board motherboard sound.

A couple of questions:
Are the DT150s best in this price range? I'll use them mostly for music & gaming.

Is it worth me buying a sound card or one of those (cheap) mini amps with them? I'd be happy with a sound card providing I can switch between my speakers and my headphones with ease without having to unplug at the back of my computer. Or, if the sound card can plug into my PC case front audio then that would work nicely.

DT150 are very good headphones. Good to see you are not put off by the retro look! :D So many people seem more concerned with how headphones look, and in some cases place the looks above the sound. :(

Anyway, DT150 I think are a more neutral headphone, so they will have a better balance across the frequencies, making them ideal for DJs. DT770 are more lively with accentuated treble and bass, so they can be considered the more 'fun' of the two. Some people do find the V shape frequency response a little fatiguing on the DT770, but it really depends on the listener's tastes. For music, it depends what you listen to, and whether or not you are looking for a 'bassy' headphone. DT770 are known to be very good gaming headphones, but it would seem the DT150 are also good, looking at a few comments.

I'd certainly get a sound card. You've got ALC892 looking at your board specs, which isn't particularly great. Even a budget sound card should be an improvement, plus, both headphones are 250 Ohm (although there is a 80 Ohm version of the DT770 as well), meaning onboard audio isn't really upto the task of driving any of them that well. If you don't want to spend a lot, then a Xonar DG/DGX will do a better job, or if you can afford one, a Soundblaster Z OEM for around £53, will be better still. The SB Z has connections for speakers and headphones on the card itself, so you just switch in the software. With the DG/DGX you'd have to use front audio connector to your PC case, as the card itself only has connection for speakers or headphones. If the front audio is working well for you with your motherboard with no sign of interference, then there shouldn't be a problem switching the lead to a DG/DGX.

I'm not one for looks with parts like this. Performance to price ratio > all!

I'd like the most 'natural' sound I suppose, I want hear music/games etc. as they were intended and by the sounds of it the DT150s will give me just that?

You've tempted me with the SB Z as well, I like the sound of having a separate headphone & speaker port & switching between in the software. Can you assign shortcuts to switch, or would it be a tray icon or something I can click on and select the output?

I'm sure you'll like the DT150's - they sound very good.
I have a pair of each of the DT headphones in the range and use them (150's) and the 880's the most.
