i have found an old fish tank of my parents in the loft with all the gizmos (pumps heaters etc) and im wanting to have some clownfish.. the tank is massive and i just have no idea where to start.... someone on here needs to be very kind and tell me where to start.. what to do and how to do it.. please :D

yeah it shows peoples current tank setups, and people who know what they are talking about..... im asking for someone to give me advice without having to trawl through millions of other peoples posts and pictures of tanks

Read it. There's lot of knowledgable people in that thread. You'll learn a lot.

im glad your helpful.. i have read it, hence my willingness to now own my own fish.. i would just like help thats more specific to my own cause sure thats not too much to ask.. its not instant gratification its more than i want to make sure what im doing is right.. if people dont want to help then they dont have to help.. nor do you have to post things that are also unhelpful..

You know what guys, No wonder the newer members\lower post counts dont stick around here long. You're so damn nasty. How about just STFU if you don't want to answer him

I thought your nick was "wannabebanned" lol....

Either way, being like this won't get you anywhere and when posting in GD you most probably will get stupid responses.

Seriously though, Don't like having fish as pets, never have done.

It was helpful. You choose not to see it that way. You didn't search, nor did you read it, for something that is openly discussed. There's the huge thread I provided the link to. Had you searched, you could have asked for peoples opinions in that thread instead of making yet another thread for something that's already covered.

But of course that's not helpful

I did answer him. But once again we come across a thread where someone hasn't done the simplest thing of searching before they post. When provided with a search result that relates to what they want, they proclaim they can't be bothered to read it and instead want to be told exactly what they want. Which is more than covered in the thread that was provided.

No doubt I'll end up suspended again for saying people should search before they make a thread...

The guy is only asking a question just because some of the people on here actually LIVE on here and remember every single thread when it was posted etc, don't just slam the guy down.

Mate you are looking at marine fish, google this and it will tell you the basics. Tropical fish are easy to keep and that was the first ones i kept, I'm not too sure about marine fish.

I must admit though marine do look much much better than tropical.

Give it a go and good luck :)

I didn't remember the thread. I used the search function. Amazing that. It's a shame more people don't do it.

We get it, use the search function. You've said it several times now, But this thread exist now and people are answering. So you can move along if you dont have another answer outside of search function.

As for wannabebanned....Its not the first time thats been said :o:p

How to start?

Do a lot of reading and planning.

Start with those. When you have some idea around the subject and know roughly what you want... Go see someone who knows. Go to a Marine tank retailer. Maidenhead Aquatics is usually a good chain to start off with, and any other local retailers would be happy to help.

Then you are well on the way to being a marine keeper.

so you want clown fish.

first of how big is the tank.

you will need:

live rock AT AROUND £10 per kg, 1kg per 5 liters this is your biological filter.

coral sand -1 inch will be fine in the bottom of the tank, depending on the size around £20.

power heads for flow - 2 smaller are always better than 1 big one, so depending on tank size anything from £25 each.

skimmer - brand new depending on tank size again, something like a deltec mce 300/600, these are excellent skimmers, around £150-£200. you can get away without a skimmer if you keep a very low bio load, ie 2 fish but will need slightly bigger water changes.

salt - a 22kg tub will keep you going for 12 months - £60

if you want corals you will most likly need to upgrade the lighting to a halide or LED which can cost £150+

its better to have 2 heaters rather than one incase one fails in some way - £15

test kits NH4 NO2 NO3 minimum - £20 ish, if you want corals £50 ish

Refractometer - i suggest the d-d refractometer at around £35

TDS meter for checking the RO water - £10

RO water - you can buy this from fish shops, not all do it but it is much cheaper to buy your own unit and make it yourself. a RO unit costs around £80.

that is the minimum to get a tank running.

i would budget around £500 providing your tank is up for the task.

if you plan fish only you will not need the live rock but will need some other way of doing your biological filtration.

what a lot of people do is set up a sump to put all the equipment in and add more water volume to make things easier and to allow more fish.

a sump is a tank setup and plumbed in to the main tank that you put your heater and skimmer in and also do most of the filtering. you will need to research more into this if you want it and how best to set it up for your needs.

that should do you for now.

if you really plan to go through with it, expect it to be expensive to maintain but well worth it.

you should also spent a good few weeks researching everything you could possibly need before buying anything.

i would suggest getting on a few of the main forums and asking questions there rather than going to shops because most of the shops are trying to make a sale were as people on the web care more about the fish.

Marine fish require a lot of work to keep well and getting setup is pretty expensive.

You will need power heads to create water flow in the tank, you will also need a skimmer that basically lifts all the crap from your tank. If as you say you have a large tank that you plan to stock up with a fair few fish your going to require quiet a big skimmer.

The other thing to think about is you will need live rock, bought from a shop its around £15 per KG. You can always pick it up second had though for around £5 per KG.

Lastly and most importantly your going to need water, not just any old tap water either :) You will need RO water (Google it), which is then mixed with salt to create the right environment for marine fish. Most shops that have a marine section will sell ready salted water in 5 gallon drums, they are £6 each at my local place. Think about how many you are going to need to fill the tank, the funds soon start mounting up. I need to do a water change every week, 5 gallons at a time.

It is a very rewarding hobby though, I kept tropical fish for years and there is no comparison. Im no expert by any means but if you have any more question fire away :)

i should also say that its is much more cost effective to make your own RO water, you also get better quality as unless your local fish shop is really good their water tends to be poor.

RO water should have a TDS reading of 0, people i know on other forums have measured the water from their LFS and its worse than tap water.

Damn you utajoker, for once I was thinking I would be the expert in a thread :(

sorry ive never been one before :p
