I've been thinking about treating myself to a portable console and think that the PSP is going to suit me best. Just wondering about a few things-

Is there any reason why I shouldn't- ie. some amazing new handheld I haven't heard about just around the corner or a new revision of the PSP on the horizon?

Base, Value, Giga - What am I best off getting, or whats better VFM.

Must have games

Must avoid games

and anything else you good people can think of.

Many thanks.

Hey,
Good choice on choosing a PSP.

Must Have games on the PSP are:
GTA
Tekken: DR
Initial D (really good japanese racing game)
Hot Shot Golf
PES or Fifa07(fiifa is surprisingly good)

Must Avoid games, well I don't really dislike that many games bar Midnight Club 3 mainly because of the long loading time, its just isn't worth the effort.

And for which package for the console it depends, if you want to put music and videos or gettinga 1.5 firmware(cant discuss what its used for) I would either get a value or base and get a 2gb mem card. If your just gonna put some music and save games I would get the giga pack.

Must have games,
SOCOM
Killzone (maybe wait till the online comes out in a month or so)
Ratch and Clank Size matters
MGS: PO
Syphon Filter
Lumines
Lumines 2
Wipeout pure
GTA: LCS and from what i hear VCS

GTA: LCS is a must! Lemmings is also quite fun. I enjoyed it anyway, oh and Sega Mega Drive Collection. Certainly brings back some memories that :D

Lumines & Lumines 2 are both great.
Daxter
Everybody's (Hotshots) Golf
MGS: Portable Ops
Pro Evo 6

Also, don't forget a screen protector to stop that lovely screen from getting scratched.

I really like the PSP. My favorite of all the Sony consoles. Taken a while to settle down, but it seems there's now a steady line of decent releases coming out for it. Great for portable media, too.

Yeh agreed. I put mine up for sale quite a while back, then a few decent games started to come out so I kept hold of it. Glad I did now :p

Just wish I'd got a white one instead. Finger prints show up so much on the black one and it really annoys me having to clean it evertime I've played on it

My advice:-

Go to a more PSP oriented site like Maxconsole and browse there forums.

Get a white PSP (because of finger prints etc.) and a 4gb memory card (£59.99 from a competitor)

Go to ign or similar for game reviews

Dark_Alex as made the PSP an amazing machine.

Have fun :)

my advice is stay away from it.

I have a psp, and i like it. But only for watching movies and listening to music.

The games are awful on it pretty much, and many top developers have said they have given up on it. Its basicly dead, no good games will come out, the only good ones are GTA and MGS portable ops.

I got one, and done something which we can't talk about here. Can now play ps1 games etc on it. Its great loads of homebrew etc. Some really great games, burnout is a must! :p

P.S you will get a 2gig memory stick for about £15 on a certain auction site. ;)

Hmmm... some cloak and dagger stuff it seems so I had better check out that other forum. Thanks for the opinions and advice so far.

As for what I'll use it for it will just be games. If I want to watch a film on the go I whack a DVD in my laptop or rip it to my PDA. I've got an MP3 player for music (which is never used :o )

A DVD ripped to the PSP will probably be better than to your PDA, unless you have a widescreen PDA. On a small screen like a PDA or PSP I found widescreen makes all the difference.

All that cloak and dagger stuff will only let you play 10 yr old ps1 games and some really basic home made games. I'm sure this is not what you meant by buying it to play games ;-) (Never understood people who buy modern consoles to play 10 yr old games tbh).

I cannot believe that no-one has mentioned Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max. You can't beat a bit of SF2 in the palm of you hand :D.

I got psp for my other half for xmas but since then i have had more use out of it. Its an excellent handheld as most have said here, and its worth 'adjusting' it to give yourself a wider scope of new and old games. That fella alex was plastered all over the bbc website this week

Its a great machine, i also have a DS, and much prefer the PSP.

best games so far for me are

Locoroco
Fifa 2007
Football Manager handheld
ridge racer 2
lumines 2
Vice City

I got a psp for valentines day. It's wicked cool and you can play gran turismo 2 on it no problems at full speed.
It's not even a homebrew thing. Sony implemented the emulation :)

I have on UMD:
Tekken
Pro evo
GTA-VCS
Midnight club
Burnout

They are all awesome.

Also, locoroco kicks ass :D

I agree, it's good for video's and music, but it's not the be all and end all, it also has an awful analogue stick which after 20-30 minutes really starts to hurt my thumb.

Personally I think the best console is the GP2x is the best hand-held of the bunch, it has unmatched media play and a massive back-catalogue of games.
