Thinking of going for a PSP

Good if you are into retro gaming.....

Monster Hunter.

I have no clue what it's about (apart from monster hunting) but Japanese PSP sales went up by 65,000 last week due to its release so must be pretty good.

Who isn't??!

Come on man....it aint every game that is into such style. I wanna get one but i honestly dont know how easy or hard it is to do the things (if you get what i mean)

Pumaz speaks the truth (minus the ign part :P)

Stay away from fake memory cards. Do not buy any via auction.

Some good games include-

Initial D: Street Stage
Ridge Racers
Wipeout Pure
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops
Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure
Metal Slug Anthology
Gradius Collection
Loco Roco
Lumines
Murcury
Every Extend Extra
Ultimate Ghosts N Goblins
PoPoLoCrois
Valkyrie Profile Lenneth
Breath of Fire 3
Tales Of Eternia
Exit
Spectral Souls

There's also upcoming games such as the PSP remake of the PSX classic, Final Fantasy Tactics (oh god yes!)

Also, off the top of my head-

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
Crush
Parodius Collection
Jeanne d'Arc - (only available in Japan right now, this has to get an English release at some point
Silent Hill: Origins
God of War (providing it isn't a port of the PS2 game)
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
Riviera PSP

Upcoming games to avoid-

Final Fantasy 1 and 2 (Seriously... a port of a GBA game that was ported from the PSX which was ported from the Wonderswan which was ported from the NES and they're going to be sold seperately as well.... thanks but no thanks -__-")

The PSP also has this massive back catalogue of games, it also plays PSP and PSX games.

I'm interested in buying a PSP too and was wondering if Pro Evo Soccer 6 is any good on it, plus can I update the teams etc?

Have you got a link to back this statement up? Apart from the completely b0rked chronology there (NES/MSX, then a *complete* rewrite for PSX, then ANOTHER rewrite for WSC, which was then ported to GBA.

2007 is the 20th Anniversary of the release of Final Fantasy. IF Square mark this, it *will* be a very special release, not just a port ;) That said, if it *is* marked, then it'll likely be a Japan exclusive, but worth having all the same :p

How are they going to be special? What can they possibly add to these two games that hasn't already been added? I can't back it up (though going off memory I thought it was pretty accurate :p) but it's still another re-release of two very basic and boring games. I'd rather they went and put all that energy into something new.

yeah its good and yes you can

although i think fifa is better on psp

which is weird considering i hate it on all other formats

Has anyone tried the demo of Medal Of Honour Heroes? I must admit that I am not normally into fps on handheld and I havent played a deathmatch game for quite a while, but everytime I turn on my PSP I find myself drawn to it and thats just the demo!

OP
If you are planning on getting a PS3 then you can get a small back catalogue (although growing all the time) of PS1 games for a very fair price the legal way. I'm not giving an opinion on homebrew, but just in case you cant be arsed ;)

You can download the same game, once purchased, to about three different PSP's too - so if you have a mate who has one then you could maybe scrounge a freebie :D

A DVD ripped to the PSP will probably be better than to your PDA, unless you have a widescreen PDA. On a small screen like a PDA or PSP I found widescreen makes all the difference.

My PDA is widescreen in the fact that you can set the player to play at 90 degrees so you tip the thing on its side. Its quite a cheap model though so the screen isn't at its best at that angle.

If I could play a ripped DVD without having to go down the route of fiddling with firmware and homebrew etc. I would actually be quite interested.

Plus a friend of mine is getting a nice little collection of UMD's that I could raid :p

All that cloak and dagger stuff will only let you play 10 yr old ps1 games and some really basic home made games. I'm sure this is not what you meant by buying it to play games ;-) (Never understood people who buy modern consoles to play 10 yr old games tbh).

Not really truth be told. My views on retro gaming are very rose tinted. Prefer to stick to my memories of a game being the greatest thing known to man rather than play it again and think- its not as good as I remember.

Plus not invalidating my warrenty is much more important to me than any homebrew or retro stuff so I'll be leaving that alone tbh.

You dont need to to fiddle with firmware or homebrew to play DVD rips etc on your PSP. You just need to convert them to MPEG4 and you can download free software to do that - do a google for PSP Video 9.

Thanks for the info, looks very interesting indeed. I can feel my credit card burning a hole in my pocket as I type

We have a lab at Teesside Uni with 25 PC's and each one has one of these connected to it. They are very easy to use.

Whilst the PSP does have a couple of great games, you have a phenomenal choice of legendary games to choose from on the GP2x, and the reason most people go for a PSP is media playback and it's dwarfed in comparison to the GP2x.

It's a very good console.

Without trying to get this thread into trouble, all those naughty things you can do with a GP2x you can also do with a PSP.

Was thinking the same thing, and on both machines it is both illegal. PLus you get all the benefits of a PSP, like PSP games and the larger screen.

I use PSP media manager from Sony and it is great. Costs under a tenner, though they should throw it in for free with the PSP. Would get a lot of moaners off their back. But if you rip a dvd it just sync's it with the PSP for you.
I always found PSP video 9 a bit hit and miss, sometimes the sound would go out of sync, and playing with the settings. PSP Media manager is just a 1 click affair.
